Rumor: Apple to launch a lower-spec iMac this month

imacIf you’re considering the purchase of a 21.5-inch iMac in the coming weeks, you may be interested to know that, according to a 9to5Mac report, the Cupertino company is about to launch a new one to add to its current range.

It’s thought that the new 21.5-inch iMac will have slightly less under the hood – in which case, it should cause slightly less damage to your wallet.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the expected specifications of the new machine, with information for the existing entry level 21.5-inch Mac shown in brackets:

  • 3.1 GHz dual-core processor (2.5 GHz quad-core processor)
  • 2 GB of DDR3 RAM (4 GB of RAM)
  • 250 GB of hard drive storage space (500 GB)
  • AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics processor with 256 MB of dedicated memory (same processor but with double the dedicated memory at 512 MB)

Apple’s entry level 21.5-inch iMac is currently priced at $1,199, so it could well be that this rumored model will break the $1000 barrier. It may be worth a look if you’re eager to save a few hundred bucks – you’ll still be getting a neat piece of kit with plenty of power.

It’s also pointed out by 9to5Mac that refurbished entry level iMacs are currently showing on Apple’s online store for $929. Will the new one beat this on the price front?

9to5Mac’s source, a Mr. X who is known to have got things right in the past, says that the new computer will be launched (without fanfare) on August 16, or thereabouts.

HP’s answer to Apple’s iMac is discounted from to $450 this weekend
A man does creative work at the HP 27-inch all-in-one PC.

If you don't really have the space to fit a whole desktop computer, then you may want to consider going for an all-in-one (AIO) solution; it will save you a ton of space, plus you don't have to go out and buy each part individually. Luckily, there are some great early Memorial Day deals on AIO solutions you can take advantage of, such as this deal on the HP All-in-One 27, which usually goes for $850 but has been discounted down to just $450. That makes it an excellent budget pick if you just want something for the basics and don't expect to do any complex tasks on it, like graphical rendering.

Why you should buy the HP All-in-One 27
While the HP All-in-One 27 might not be as powerful as an iMac, it does have similar dimensions, with a large 27-inch screen and a surprisingly tiny bezel, which is actually a bit smaller than the iMac's.The screen runs a 1920 x 1080 resolution and can hit a peak brightness of 300 nits, which will be fine for a well-lit room, and you can upgrade it to a touch version for $200, but it's probably not worth it in the long run. Under the hood, you'll find an Intel Core i3-1315U, an entry-level CPU that should handle most basic tasks just fine, although we'd probably suggest upgrading to the Intel Core i5-1335U for an extra $125, which will give you a lot more versatility and quality of life.

I ask again: Will Apple ever merge the Mac and iPad?
An Apple iPad and a MacBook together on a desk alongside a pair of headphones.

Every few months, we hear the same argument being made: Apple should bring the Mac and the iPad closer together -- or even merge them and their operating systems completely -- to create some sort of hybrid device that would solve all of Apple’s problems. While I don’t entirely agree with these assessments, they do provide an interesting look into how your Apple devices might work in the coming years.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is the latest to throw his hat into the ring, and the reporter’s Power On newsletter has detailed what he believes Apple should do to shape the future of the Mac and the iPad.
