Samsung’s new Notebook Odyssey packs next-gen RTX graphics in a thin frame

At CES, Samsung is taking the wraps off its latest high-end gaming laptop, the Notebook Odyssey. Coming after latest year’s Notebook Odyssey Z, the new laptop is sporting a premium aluminum true metal design, while still staying thin at 0.78 inches. But more than just good looks, the new gaming machine also packs G-Sync support and powerful next-gen Nvidia RTX graphics in its tiny frame.

Pricing was not immediately announced, but the Notebook Odyssey is headlined by its thin-bezel 144Hz Nvidia G-Sync display. Powered by the latest (but unspecified) Intel-8th generation hexa-Core i7 processor and the highest-end GeForce RTX 2080 series GPU, the Notebook Odyssey also looks to have a performance punch for gamers looking to take advantage of ray tracing support on Nvidia’s latest GPUs.

Elsewhere, the Notebook Odyssey comes with a special “Odyssey Mode,” which allows consumers to save different preset settings for different types of games. That includes a “Beast Mode” which Samsung says can “modulate the Samsung Notebook Odyssey’s performance depending on the software it is running.” Cooling is improved too, as Samsung says it comes with redesigned “Jet Blade” blowers that sport 83 blades each, and a new penta-pipe cooling system to help the laptop run efficiently when gaming.

With other areas of customization, consumers are free to add in an extra SSD or plug in a standard hard drive for added storage for games. There’s also support for “Black Equalizer” software which Samsung says can improve on in-game lighting. Expect for the Samsung Notebook Odyssey to be released in early 2019.

This is just the latest of the new product to be announced by Samsung at or ahead of CES. Previously, it revealed a series of modern and minimalistic displays, lead by the “Space Monitor” and a curved 32-inch gaming monitor. Earlier in November, it also announced the Notebook 9 Pen, with a new modern design, update S pen in the box, and the latest Intel eighth-generation Core i7 processor under the hood.

At CES 2023, I had a chance to look at Samsung's upcoming Odyssey Neo G9. It's a monster gaming monitor, and you don't need to look further than the spec sheet to see that. Dual 4K resolution, a 240Hz refresh rate, and a 32:9 aspect ratio with a 57-inch screen? There's a lot to love.

And after seeing it, I was floored by the quality. It's an insane gaming monitor that looks fantastic, and I can't wait to use one for an extended period of time. But there's a big problem with the new Odyssey Neo G9, and it could be dead on arrival.

CES 2023: AMD’s next-gen laptop GPU could beat a desktop RTX 3060

In AMD's CES 2023 keynote address, it debuted its next-generation RDNA3 mobile graphics chips, and their performance and efficiency look to be incredibly impressive. We don't have details on the entire range yet, and we want to conduct our own testing to verify performance, but AMD's bold claims leave us rather excited for the year ahead, especially when these chips are launched alongside impressive onboard GPU performance in next-generation AMD laptops.

The AMD RX 7600M XT and non-XT versions will feature up to 8GB of GDDR6 memory on a 128-bit memory bus, with support for AMD's smart power and tuning technologies, and are built on a 6nm process. AMD makes major claims about the performance of these GPUs, with the XT model reportedly able to deliver greater gaming performance than even an Nvidia desktop-grade RTX 3060 12GB. We'll need to test that ourselves to verify it, but if true, next-generation mobile gaming laptops are going to be incredibly impressive.

Samsung’s CES 2023 gaming monitors range from curved QD-OLEDs to 8K behemoths

Samsung is convinced you need a bigger gaming monitor -- or at least, that's what its CES 2023 lineup suggests. The company introduced four new monitors to its Odyssey gaming line, ranging from a 34-inch ultrawide monitor up to its 8K 57-inch monster.

It's an interesting move considering CES is also bringing the first 27-inch OLED monitors from LG that have been the talk of tech for the past couple of months. But for now, Samsung has just two Odyssey OLED monitors it's introducing: a 34-inch model and a 49-inch model.
