Seagate throws in free OneDrive storage with its Backup Plus hard drives

Seagate Technology revealed on June 23 that its latest line of external hard drives will include 200GB of storage on OneDrive. The Backup Plus family, as it’s been named, also comes with Lyve’s photo and video management app.

Microsoft’s OneDrive is designed to give you access to your files in the cloud from any connected mobile device. Additionally, the files you upload stay synched and up-to-date once they are in OneDrive.

Lyve is designed to combine all of your photos and videos from your devices and house them in one collection. The goal is to keep everything in a single go-to location, accessible on iOS, Android, Windows and Mac OS X.

“With features such as OneDrive cloud storage, Lyve app, and the new 4TB capacity point, Seagate Backup Plus family addresses the growing needs for data storage and backup with flexible data access and simple data management in the personal storage market,” said Jingwen Li, research analyst for IDC

.

The USB 3.0-powered Seagate Backup Plus with a 4TB capacity will be released in mid-July at a starting price of $240. The 12mm Seagate Backup Plus Slim, which is powered via USB 3.0, is currently available at 500GB for $80. However, a 1TB version is also an option at $100, while a 2TB edition is selling for $130.

For those who want a desktop option, the Seagate Backup Plus Desktop drive is available in options ranging from 2TB to 8TB, priced at $120 and $360, respectively. It has the ability to work via AC power adapter or USB 3.0.

WhatsApp backups may soon count against Google Drive storage

New evidence found in a beta build of WhatsApp for Android suggests that Google may no longer be offering unlimited storage for WhatsApp backups.

This probably shouldn’t come as a big surprise, as Google has gradually been clamping down on its unlimited storage offerings. No regrets: Hisense lets you test drive its TVs for free for 100 days

Though it's not quite intended as a test drive program, Chinese TV brand Hisense has taken the unusual step of creating a free, 100-day trial period for many of its 2021 4K, 8K, and laser TV models. The move comes after Hisense took a survey of U.S. buyers and discovered, unsurprisingly, that 80% of them want the ability to try a TV at home before committing to a purchase. The program started on September 9 and continues through October 31, 2021. During this time, you'll be able to buy a Hisense U800GR, U8G, U7G, U6G, or L9G TV from a participating retailer and return it for a full refund if you're not happy with it.

We've never seen an offer like this from other 4K UHD TV manufacturers, which suggests that Hisense feels that it needs to overcome some hesitancy among TV buyers. Despite being a huge manufacturer and seller of TVs globally, Hisense is a relatively new brand to the U.S. market, so it doesn't enjoy the same recognition as the companies with longer histories (Sony, Samsung, Sharp, Toshiba, and LG), or even some of the relatively newer brands (Vizio, TCL).

Dell now offers storage of up to a max of 8TB on both its XPS 15 and XPS 17 laptops. Both of these laptops have received recent updates in 2021, and now Dell has opened up a high-end configuration option to beef up these machines even more.

Now, 8TB is a massive amount of storage capacity to include as a preconfigured option, and it is highly impressive for Dell to be doing this. Not a lot of laptops, not even high-end ones, offer quite this much storage. Apple is one of the few others that have taken this route with the MacBook Pro, and Dell has followed suit.
