Toshiba Announces AMD-Powered Notebook

Toshiba announced the Satellite A215 series laptop today, a mid-priced notebook powered by AMD’s Turion 64 dual-core processors. The newest Satellite represents a return to AMD after a long hiatus for Toshiba – the company’s last notebook to feature an AMD processor was built in 2000.

“Toshiba based its decision to launch a notebook computer line featuring AMD technology on retailer interest and consumer demand,” said Jeff Barney, vice president of marketing at Toshiba’s digital products division, in a statement. “Toshiba is confident the market will embrace the opportunity to purchase a Toshiba notebook that is powered by AMD technology.”

Naturally, the AMD-powered laptops will also feature graphics cards from AMD-owned ATI – the Radeon X1200. Other specs include a 15.4-inch widescreen LCD, 250GB hard drive, and 2GB of RAM.

The base-level A215-S4757 sells for $899.99, while the high-spec A215-S4767 with a gold edition TL64 processor goes for $1,299. Both are available immediately from Toshiba Direct.

The data for the first quarter of 2024 is in, and it's bad news for the giants behind some of the best graphics cards. GPU shipments have decreased, and while every GPU vendor experienced this, AMD saw the biggest drop in shipments. Combined with the fact that AMD's gaming revenue is down significantly, it's hard not to wonder about the company's future in the gaming segment.

The report comes from the analyst firm Jon Peddie Research, and the news is not all bad. The PC-based GPU market hit 70 million units in the first quarter of 2024, and from year to year, total GPU shipments (which includes all types of graphics cards) increased by 28% (desktop GPU shipments dropped by -7%, and CPU shipments grew by 33.3%). Comparing the final quarter of 2023 to the beginning of this year looks much less optimistic, though.

It appears that AMD may be just about ready to strike a huge blow against Intel -- and it might come sooner than expected. According to a new rumor, AMD is said to be announcing its next-gen top processors as early as next week, presumably during Computex 2024. While AMD might beat Intel to the punch when it comes to releasing new CPUs, the Ryzen 9000 lineup may start out small.

The tantalizing bit of gossip comes from wjm47196 on Chiphell forums, whose message was later shared by VideoCardz. The message itself is quite cryptic, but reading between the lines gives us some insight into the upcoming lineup.
