Toshiba Announces AMD-Powered Notebook

Toshiba announced the Satellite A215 series laptop today, a mid-priced notebook powered by AMD’s Turion 64 dual-core processors. The newest Satellite represents a return to AMD after a long hiatus for Toshiba – the company’s last notebook to feature an AMD processor was built in 2000.

“Toshiba based its decision to launch a notebook computer line featuring AMD technology on retailer interest and consumer demand,” said Jeff Barney, vice president of marketing at Toshiba’s digital products division, in a statement. “Toshiba is confident the market will embrace the opportunity to purchase a Toshiba notebook that is powered by AMD technology.”

Naturally, the AMD-powered laptops will also feature graphics cards from AMD-owned ATI – the Radeon X1200. Other specs include a 15.4-inch widescreen LCD, 250GB hard drive, and 2GB of RAM.

The base-level A215-S4757 sells for $899.99, while the high-spec A215-S4767 with a gold edition TL64 processor goes for $1,299. Both are available immediately from Toshiba Direct.

AMD ‘basically lies’ about Computex benchmark, YouTuber says

AMD is coming under some fire for performance data it shared following its Computex 2024 keynote. Thankfully, the data in question doesn't concern AMD's upcoming Ryzen 9000 CPUs, which are slated to launch in July. Instead, it concerns the performance numbers AMD shared for its repackaged Ryzen 9 5900 XT and Ryzen 7 5800 XT CPUs, which are built on the aging Zen 3 architecture.

In a monthly Q&A, YouTube channel Hardware Unboxed broke down the performance numbers. In AMD's presentation, it showed the Ryzen 9 5900 XT and Ryzen 7 5800 XT beating the Intel competition by a few points in games. AMD compared the CPUs to the Core i7-13700K and Core i5-13600K, respectively, and showed its CPUs beating Intel by upwards of 12% in some games. Hardware Unboxed says that data isn't an accurate representation, however.

No one can argue with free games, and that's exactly what AMD is offering with the purchase of a new RX 7800 XT or RX 7700 XT. You'll have to spend hundreds of dollars on a GPU, sure, but at least you're getting some free games to try it out with -- as well as one of the best graphics cards available right now.

It's a choose-your-own-adventure style of promotion. AMD has four games available, and you get to choose two to keep. The list includes Starfield, Lies of P, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and Company of Heroes 3, all four of which have seen promotions from AMD in the past. I'm partial to Lies of P, which catapulted to the top of my list of favorite games last year with its tight, Bloodborne-style combat and dark fantasy take on the classic tale of Pinocchio.
