Storage vendor Verbatim is continuing to show it’s serious about the hard drive business, today announcing its new SureFire line of external hard disk drives in 250, 320, and 500 GB capacities. The drives pack not only a USB 2.0 port but also a high-performance FireWire 800 port for transfer rates of up to 800 MB/s…something sure to appeal to MacBook Pro owners tired of poking along at USB 2.0 or FireWire 400 bandwidths.
The drives power off the USB or FireWire bus—no separate AC adapter required— and come with a black carrying case to protect the drive while they’re being hauled around. The drives feature a 2.5-inch mechanism with a 5400 rpm spindle speed and 8 MB of cache memory. The drives ship with both USB and FireWire cable, and Verbatim says the drives are ready to use with Mac OS X Leopard’s integrated Time Machine backup service—a good thing, since the 320 and 500 GB versions of the drive are currently for sale in the online Apple Store.
The drives are available now, with the 250 GB version going for $109.99, the 320 GB version for $139.99, and the 500 GB version going for $179.99.
