Apple Could Launch New IPod Product In June

“Banc of America Securities expects Apple Computer to launch a new iPod product “as early as June” to help stimulate demand and market share. Banc of America assumes that iPod unit shipments decrease to 4.8 million units in the fiscal third quarter ending June from 5.3 million units in the second quarter. The research firm noted that its model incorporates “some seasonal softness” and with flat revenue guidance from Apple’s last conference call, “we imagine that investors are looking to flat to slightly down MP3 sales, and strength in CPUs.” The firm believes that flash memory-based players are growing faster than drive players.”

In the postindustrial world, human populations are more dispersed than ever, but one of the effects of migration is that the great rifts of time and geography can leave people feeling disconnected from their ancestors. It’s no surprise then that so many people have submitted samples of their genetics to services like 23andMe, which collect these samples and evaluate them, offering insights into health and even the geographic regions their ancestors came from. Tens of millions have people have used these services, but the market for them seems to have cooled off.

If the demand for home genetic tests doesn’t bounce back, 23andMe may have a different path forward. The company has built a Therapeutics team, and since 2015 this team has used the genetic data provided by consenting customers -- the company claims 80 percent of consent to the research -- to develop drugs for treating specific health issues. The company has partnered with Spanish pharmaceutical company Almirall to develop an antibody that could help deal with some particularly nasty diseases.

New Apple self-driving car patent could turn Siri into your personal chauffeur

Apple wants to patent a new technology that would allow you to use voice commands to tell your self-driving car where you want to go, with the car doing the navigation, driving, and parking for you. The end result would be a Siri-like system for controlling your self-driving car.

The patent application, titled “Guidance of Autonomous Vehicles in Destination Vicinities Using Intent Signals,” was initially filed on August 2 of last year, and made public on Thursday, January 23. The technology described in the patent is meant to direct self-driving vehicles to a destination by using voice commands, gestures, or touchscreens.
