Apple Watch Series 3, Apple Watch Series 5 have never been cheaper

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

There has never been a better time to buy an Apple Watch — be it an Apple Watch Series 3 or Apple Watch Series 5. Why? Because both are down to their lowest-ever prices for Memorial Day. The former is on sale from $179 at Amazon and Best Buy, and the latter from $299. We aren’t kidding.

For most it’s the Apple Watch Series 5 that will be the attracting force, and rightfully so. It’s the latest smartwatch in Apple’s arsenal and it’s on sale for $100 under sticker, the cheapest we’ve seen it by $50 (the previous lowest-recorded price was $350). $299 for a current Apple Watch is unprecedented.

Of course, if your budget doesn’t stretch that far, the Apple Watch Series 3 is a fantastic alternative. It’s armed with nearly the same skillset as the Apple Watch Series 5. Both monitor heart health, record steps, and have all the same core functions of a smartwatch — notification mirroring and so on.

The main differences? The Apple Watch Series 5 has a larger screen that can be set to stay on at all times, an electrical heart sensor that can take ECGs, and automatic fall detection. It also has a compass built in, comes with a newer, faster processor, and lasts for a fair bit longer on a single charge.

The fact of the matter is you can’t go wrong with either of these smartwatches. They’re both absolute bargains at they’re respective price points. Although if you’re torn between the two, we’d have to side with the Apple Watch Series 5. It’s the latest model and, frankly, $100 off is bonkers.

Not a fan of the Apple Watch? There are plenty of other Memorial Day sales happening right now that see everything from the Garmin Fenix 6S Pro to the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 in the bargain bin. Our recommendation? REI has the Garmin Forerunner 45S for $150, down $50 from the usual $200.

Apple may have delayed a critical Apple Watch upgrade
Smart Stack on the Apple Watch Series 9.

It seems Apple’s highly anticipated display upgrades, especially for the Apple Watch, will have to wait a few more years. According to Bloomberg, Apple has shuttered in-house efforts to design and develop microLED panels that would have appeared on its smartwatches — and eventually more products down the road.

The current-gen Apple smartwatches rely on an OLED panel, but Apple has been eyeing microLED screens for the Apple Watch's future iterations. These in-house panels, which would have offered “brighter and more vibrant visuals,” were ultimately put on cold ice due to cost and complexity concerns.

Why you shouldn’t buy a new Apple Watch right now

It has been over six months since the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 launched, and they are still considered two of the best smartwatches on the market. However, there are two significant reasons why you might not want to purchase either of these models.

Those reasons are the Apple Watch Series 8 and the first-generation Apple Watch Ultra. That's right — buying a 2022 Apple Watch over the newer models might be a better choice for you.

8 watches you should buy instead of an Apple Watch
A person wearing the Apple Watch Series 9.

The Apple Watch Series 9 is the best smartwatch you can buy, regardless of the fact you can only use it with an iPhone. It's also great that it comes in three flavors — the Series 9, along with the Apple Watch SE 2, and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 — to suit many more people and pockets than you may first think. However, perhaps you want something a little different on your wrist or even a weekend alternative when you don’t feel like wearing a touchscreen watch.

That’s where this list should help you out, as we’ve gathered eight watches to buy instead of the Apple Watch. Notice I said “watches,” and not just smartwatches, as some non-connected wristwear has been included. Our choices cover the entire Apple Watch range in terms of price, even going above and below, to give you some real inspiration about a watch to buy instead of — or as well as — the superb Apple Watch.
