Animal Well will be part of the PS Plus Game Catalog from day one

Sony revealed the batch of video games that will come to PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra’s Game Catalog over the next month. The headliners are three new day-one additions to the service, including the already-confirmed Tales of Kenzera: Zau and Dave the Diver as well as Animal Well.

Animal Well launches on May 9 and has caught Digital Trends’ eye for being an eerie Metroidvania that won’t hold players’ hands as they explore. It is also the first game that will be published by Bigmode, a fledgling publisher founded by YouTuber Videogamedunkey. PS Plus Premium and Extra’s game catalog had historically been less focused on games coming to the service on day one than has Xbox Game Pass, but that’s finally starting to shift. While Tales of Kenzera: Zau comes out on April 23 and Animal Well will be released on May 9, Dave the Diver and the following PS1, PS4, and PS5 games will come to PS Plus’ Game Catalog on April 16:

All in all, this is shaping up to be a very good month for the PS Plus Game Catalog. Howeber, the following games will be leaving the service on April 15 ahead of this new group of titles:

PS Plus is getting one of the best sci-fi RPGs ever this month
A companion in The Outer Worlds.

The February additions to the PlayStation Plus Premium and Essential were unveiled by Sony on Wednesday morning, and it's a great batch of games for RPG fans. Thirteen games will hit the service on February 20, many of which come from Bandai Namco Entertainment's Tales Off series. The most exciting addition for me is The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition, which is the complete version of a fantastic sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment.

The Outer Worlds first released for PC, PS4, and Xbox One in October 2019, while Spacer's Choice Edition gave the RPG a next-gen upgrade in March 2023. It's a choice-driven sci-fi RPG that takes place in a dystopic spacefaring future where corporations reign supreme. The adventure takes players to colonies in the Halcyon system, where they intervene in various conflicts and make lots of choices that shape the narrative. It's less ambitious than a game like Starfield, but that gives The Outer Worlds a sense of focus that makes each decision feel more important. Add in some entertaining writing and a lot of leeway for player choices, and you have one of the best RPGs of the past several years.

One of the best Lego games ever kicks off PS Plus’ 2024 additions

The January 2024 lineup of new titles coming to PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra's Game Catalog was just revealed. It's a muted month for the service, with the loss of titles like It Takes Two being more noteworthy than the gains. The highest-profile game coming is the Resident Evil 2 remake, which is being added to Xbox Game Pass on January 16. Still, there is one dark horse addition that I'd highly recommend: Lego City Undercover.

Initially released for Wii U in 2013 by TT Fusion and WB Games and remastered for PS4 and other platforms in 2017, Lego City Undercover is a charming open-world game based on the official Lego City playsets. I have fond memories of playing this game on Wii U, as it's a surprisingly focused yet robust open-world experience, essentially being a kid-friendly take on Grand Theft Auto that puts players in control of a cop instead of a criminal. Although it's primarily aimed at kids, older players will get a kick out of all the references to TV shows and movies like The Shawshank Redemption.

The most underrated Final Fantasy game is coming to PS Plus this month

Sony unveiled December 2023's new titles for PlayStation Plus Premium and the Extra Game Catalog, and it contains some heavy hitters. While the addition of the PlayStation 4 and PS5 versions of Grand Theft Auto V will probably be the biggest draw for most players, I want to shout out the addition of what might be the most underrated modern Final Fantasy game: Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin.

Released in March 2022, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is technically a prequel to the original Final Fantasy that reveals the origin story of that game's villain, Garland. In reality, Stranger of Paradise becomes a metacontextual analysis of the cyclical nature of the Final Fantasy series, serving as both a celebration and a biting critique of one of gaming's oldest RPG franchises. It also features one of the most bonkers video game endings I've ever experienced, so going through the adventure is worth it for that alone. Thankfully, it's enjoyable to play along the way as a more approachable class-based Soulslike from Team Ninja, the developer behind NioH and next year's Rise of the Ronin.
