Assassin’s Creed is going to feudal Japan, China, and beyond in 3 new games

Ubisoft devoted an entire stream segment to the Assassin’s Creed franchise at Ubisoft Forward 2022. The block saw the announcement of four projects coming from the series, including a mobile game, a new mainline title, an experience hub, and another flagship game coming alongside the rest.

The largest of these announcements is the next mainline Assassin’s Creed game by Ubisoft Quebec, currently dubbed Assassin’s Creed: Codename Red. Like the recent flagship entries in the series, Codename Red is taking the globetrotting open-world series to a new country and culture with a feudal Japan setting. To top it all off, the main character of the game is a shinobi. Not too much else was said about the title and it does not have a firm release date.

A second Assassin’s Creed game is coming as well, though it’s a bit more mysterious. This one comes from Ubisoft Montreal with the assistance of Clint Hocking, an ex-LucasArts and Valve designer and director. Dubbed Assassin’s Creed: Project Hexe, the title only got a quicker teaser showing an Assassin’s Creed logo made out of twigs hanging in the woods. Ubisoft notes that the game isn’t a traditional installment of the series, but didn’t elaborate on how much of a departure it is.

Both of those titles will live inside Assassin’s Creed Infinity, a curious new project from Ubisoft. Project Infinity is a hub that’ll tie various games together, though it’s unclear how that works. Ubisoft did mention, however, that it’s looking into creating standalone multiplayer Assassin’s Creed titles, which would also live in the hub.

In addition to all of that, Ubisoft also showed off Assassin’s Creed: Project Jade. This entry in the series is a mobile game where players create their own assassins and explore an open-world set in ancient China. It’s a different project from another mobile Assassin’s Creed game announced during the show, which will be exclusive to Netflix.

No launch details have been given for the upcoming titles, but Ubisoft states that Infinity and the projects within it will launch “in the coming years.”

Assassin’s Creed Infinity: release date speculation, gameplay, and more
Assassin leaping through the air to kill a target

The Assassin's Creed franchise has become an integral part of video game culture. With 12 major titles under their belt, Ubisoft Montreal and Quebec have been expanding the ever-so-secret society of Assassins on a relatively yearly basis. Assassin's Creed: Valhalla was the biggest game yet, with over 100 hours of content between the base game and current DLCs, but Ubisoft is dreaming even bigger.

Assassin's Creed Infinity is starting to sound like the biggest game of all time, but news on the front has taken a backseat as of late. Ubisoft seems more focused on Skull and Bones, due out November 8, 2022.  That said, here's everything we know about Assassin's Creed Infinity, including release date, gameplay, multiplayer, and more.

The next Assassin’s Creed is an upgraded Valhalla expansion

Ubisoft has upgraded an expansion for 2020's Assassin's Creed Valhalla into a stand-alone game that could release as soon as this fall, Bloomberg reports.
According to the report, this Assassin's Creed game will be different in scope than recent games in the series. Since Assassin's Creed Origins in 2017, mainline games in the series have been sprawling open-world RPGs that could potentially last players hundreds of hours. This Assassin's Creed game will reportedly be more focused on stealth gameplay than a large open world, partially due to being an expansion-turned-game. This change of pace might prove refreshing for fans who feel burnt out by recent Assassin's Creed titles and are yearning for something closer to the pre-Origins formula.

We also know a few details regarding the story and setting. Bloomberg claims it will star a Valhalla supporting character named Basim. Meanwhile, Eurogamer reports that this new game will take place in Baghdad, which would be a significant shift from the northern European setting of Valhalla.
Previously, Bloomberg detailed Ubisoft's plans for Assassin's Creed Infinity, a live service game that Ubisoft could update with new settings and content over several years. According to the February 2022 report, that project is not ready just yet. While work on Infinity has resulted in the cancellation of some titles, this Assassin's Creed stand-alone game survived and will serve as a stopgap between Valhalla and Infinity.
Ubisoft has not confirmed any of these details. It told Bloomberg that it doesn't comment on rumors, but has a "solid and exciting lineup of titles in our pipeline, both established brands with new story twists and features, and brand-new IPs that will continue to change the landscape of today's video games."
While Ubisoft has yet to officially announce the game or what platforms it will be on, this Assassin's Creed game is expected to launch sometime in 2022 or 2023.
