Obsidian Entertainment gave us an in-depth look at Avowed during today’s Developer_Direct event and confirmed that the RPG will release in the fall.

Whether you’re into open-world RPGs in the vein of The Elder Scrolls or The Outer Worlds or you’re a longtime fan of Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity series, the upcoming fantasy RPG Avowed may be exactly what you’ve been waiting for. More importantly, the world of Eora, which Pillars of Eternity and its sequel inhabit, is finally back in action for a deeper exploration of the Living Lands region that many longtime fans are well aware of. And there’s a ton to look forward to when Avowed finally releases on Xbox and PC later this year.

Created by Obsidian, which many RPG fans know as the developer of Fallout: New Vegas, The Outer Worlds, and Pillars of Eternity, Avowed is coming in hot with a slew of cool features. We got a closer look at the first-person combat system during this Developer_Direct 2024 stream, which explored Avowed’s frantic action combat that lets you swap between spellcasting, melee, and ranged fighting styles in short order.

All that is important to fighting the wide variety of enemies shown off in the deep dive. Some have shields and heavy armor that look extra hard to fight against, but if you manage to use your abilities tactfully, it seems like you can usually come up with creative ways to defeat your foes. And if you grew attached to your gun-and wand-slinging battlemage in Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, you’re in luck! Avowed lets you do all that in glorious 3D. You can dual-wield wands and pistols, or mix and match at your leisure.

Obsidian suggests “using your enchanted wands to freeze enemies, then power attack to shatter them”.

There was also a bit of questing and dialogue shown off in the Direct stream, and it appears the Living Lands are teeming with a wide variety of locales — from lush jungles to rocky deserts — as befitting their description as “a land of wild weather, strange beasts, and hundreds of difficult-to-reach valleys containing oddities never before seen by mortals” on the official Pillars of Eternity Wiki.

Avowed is releasing for PC and Xbox Series X/S in the fall, which is when we will finally get to explore the Living Lands in full. No exact release date has been given at this time.

Narrative RPG Pentiment is the Xbox exclusive to watch this fall
Andreas paints in Pentiment.

This holiday season is shaping up to be an unusual one for Xbox owners. Players aren’t getting a big-ticket game like Halo Infinite or Forza Horizon 5, leaving parents scrambling to figure out a clear gift this year. Instead, Microsoft is pushing a series of smaller titles set to debut on Xbox Game Pass. That list includes comedic shooter High on Life, biopunk horror game Scorn, and indie darling Slime Rancher 2. But the most intriguing game on Xbox’s slate is also the most atypical: Pentiment.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is finally launching quite soon

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum finally has a release date. Daedalic Entertainment and Nacon confirmed during a hands-off preview event attended by Digital Trends that this unique Lord of the Rings game finally launches on September 1.
Daedalic Entertainment first announced The Lord of the Rings: Gollum in 2019, but the game was pushed back to 2022 when Nacon came on board as publisher. Thankfully, we won't have to wait much longer for this adventure as it's only a few months away. Since its announcement, the rights for Lord of the Rings games have gone up for sale, and EA has announced a mobile game based on the franchise. Thankfully, none of those developments seemed to have negatively impacted The Lord of the Rings: Gollum.

Digital Trends got an early look at The Lord of the Rings: Gollum via a hands-off demo. While this may seem like an odd comparison, imagine Uncharted's platforming in a stealth-focused game set in the Lord of the Rings universe. I saw Gollum hopping around ledges in both Mordor and Mirkwood as the developer carefully managed Gollum's stamina so he wouldn't fall off any ledges he was climbing.
Combat is minimal as Gollum has limited stamina he can use in attacks. As such, platforming and puzzle-solving will be the best ways to get through many situations. Throughout the game, players will also have to choose between the Gollum and Sméagol personalities during key story moments, and these decisions will impact the narrative.
Characters like Thranduil and Gandalf also made appearances in the demo. They sported looks more similar to their description in the books than how they were portrayed in the movies. While Gollum obviously isn't the prettiest protagonist, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has a distinct look and feel compared to any The Lord of the Rings game that has come before it.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be released for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on September 1. A Nintendo Switch version is also in the works, but does not have a release window outside of 2022.

The Wolf Among Us 2 will launch in five parts next year
Bibgy smokes a cigarette in front of a full moon.

More than two years after its reveal at The Game Awards 2019, Telltale Games re-revealed The Wolf Among Us 2 on The Game Awards' YouTube channel today. A new trailer was released and a 2023 launch was confirmed.
The trailer follows Bigby as he discusses his tactics as a private investigator to a support group and confronts some magical criminals, including the Scarecrow and Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz. His opponents get the upper hand, but Bigby becomes a werewolf to fight back.
The Wolf Among Us 2 - OFFICIAL Full Trailer (2022)
In an interview after the trailer, the developers explained that this game takes place six months after the first game. It will follow Snow White and Bigby as they try to rebuild Fabletown in a less corrupt way. The presentation also confirmed that Adam Harrington and Erin Yvette will reprise their roles as Bigby and Snow White, respectively. The actors teased increased tensions between the two characters as Bigby is a loose cannon and Snow White doesn't want to pick favorites while she's mayor.
The whole season will last five episodes, though Telltale and developer AdHoc teased that episodes won't come out until all of them are done and can be released in quick succession. As such, it seems like all episodes will be out in 2023, and we won't have to wait several months between each piece of the story like we did with season 1.
The Wolf Among Us 2 will be released for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in 2023. The PC version will be an Epic Games Store exclusive at launch.
