If you tried to log onto the PC version of Battlefield 4 this weekend, you probably had more than a few issues. Odds are you muttered and swore at the game, and may have threatened it with violence. The blame doesn’t rest with EA or DICE though, but rather with a consistent denial-of-service (DDoS) attack.
“We are being targeted by a DDOS, but working on fixing it asap,” A member of DICE posted on the forums (which was then reported by Kotaku) “Im sorry somebody is ruining your and my day. Rest assured we are doing our best to mitigate the situation though.”
The attack made it difficult to connect, and those that could jump in a game faced odd issues, including starting without any of the items or weapons they unlocked. Then while angrily cursing the digital gods, they likely got booted from the game.
PlayStation 4 users also reported several problems with the online side of things, including lost characters and connection issues. According to an EA post on its help forums, however, this was a result of the PS4’s day one patch, and not a result of EA’s servers. That message has since been removed.
No word yet on who did the attack or if DICE has completely fixed it yet, but the servers appear to be running normally at the moment.
