Bayonetta 3 completes the holiday game lineup with October release date

Everyone’s favorite Umbra witch is finally making her grand return. Bayonetta 3 will officially launch for Nintendo Switch on October 28. With the release being right before Halloween, it seems PlatinumGames wants to bring a new meaning to “Season of the Witch” after redefining Christmas with Bayonetta 2 back in 2014.

Bayonetta 3 made its commercial debut four entire years ago during the 2017 Game Awards with a logo reveal. Nine months ago, we got first looks at the gameplay and enhancements to the battle with a gameplay trailer. With today’s release date reveal trailer, more details on gameplay, story, and a fresh playable character have been shared, making Bayonetta 3 seem to be the most expansive title of the series to date.

All the action gameplay fans have come to love from the series is returning with an added kaiju flavor. Now Bayonetta can directly control her giant demonic summons and actively battle against other giant foes. She also has a new ability called “Demon Masquerade,” which allows her to channel the demon linked to her weapon, adding more combos to the mix.

The story takes Bayonetta to more down-to-Earth locations such as China and Japan. It’s also confirmed that there will be more than just one Bayonetta to meet in Bayonetta 3, with others being a part of a virtual coven.

Finally, a new character, a katana-wielding witch in training named Viola is joining the cast as the new secondary playable character. She comes with a giant feline ally named Cheshire, adding to the Alice in Wonderland dimension-hopping the game seems to be going for.

You can celebrate the spooky season with tricks instead of treats with Bayonetta 3 when it launches on October 28 on Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo Switch 2: release date rumors, features we want, and more
Prime Day Nintendo Switch Deals

Rumors of a Nintendo Switch 2 (or Switch Pro) have been circulating for years. Whispers of the next-gen Nintendo console first started when The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was initially teased in 2019, gained steam when the Switch OLED launched in 2021, and are increasing now that the standard Switch has been out for six years.

There's no doubt that the Nintendo Switch is a fantastic console -- it has a unique and impressive game library (with more upcoming games slated for this year), the number of features included with Nintendo Switch Online is constantly improving, and it's still our favorite portable console -- but it isn't without its flaws. There's enough room for improvement to warrant an entirely new console in the near future. Nintendo recently announced that we wouldn't see a Switch upgrade in the next fiscal year, meaning the absolute earliest we get a look at a new Nintendo console would be in late 2024.

Nintendo’s next game is all about mastering NES classics
The physical version of Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition.

Nintendo has announced Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, a new game coming out this July that tests players' speedrunning skills in NES classics like Super Mario Bros. and Metroid.

A successor of sorts to the NES Remix games on Wii U and 3DS, Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition draws its name from a gaming competition Nintendo held in 1990 and then briefly again in the 2010s. Its reveal trailer features previous Nintendo World Championship contestants musing about the event, only to learn that it's returning in video game form.

Before you play Homeworld 3, try this VR game as a primer
Two fleets fight in Homeworld: Vast Reaches.

Homeworld 3 launches next week, but there's a game Homeworld fans who own a Meta Quest 2 or 3 should check out right now. Homeworld: Vast Reaches, which came to Meta's VR headsets on May 2, is a prequel set between the events of the first two Homeworld games. This VR game offers up the core Homeworld experience in a novel niche of the video game medium.

It's not as deep or complex as Homeworld 3 looks, but it doesn't need to be. Vast Reaches immerses players in the franchise's universe once again and reacquaints them with the basics of its real-time strategy combat ahead of a highly anticipated new entry on PC. As such, checking out Vast Reaches should make this last week of waiting for Homeworld 3 a little less painful.
Homeworld, but in VR
Homeworld: Vast Reaches was developed by FarBridge, who has previously worked on VR games like Walkabout Mini Golf, Dragon Fight VR, and Jar Wars. Made with Gearbox Entertainment's support and blessing, it boils Homeworld down to its core elements and rebuilds it in VR. Players control a new Fleet Command connected to Karan S'jet's Mothership, which is the conceit behind how players view battles.
