In an official dev blog post composed by Bethesda Game Studios, the Fallout 4 developer described today its improvements to the Creation Engine since the release of Skyrim in 2011.

Because its “tech team,” the developer explains, “is closely aligned with the art team,” it was able to devise features based on specific art and performance goals that each team wanted to achieve. Of these features is a physically based deferred renderer. With this, Bethesda was able to make both objects and inhabitants of the post-apocalyptic world feel “tactile and grounded.” The way metal reflects light, for example, should be different from wood.

Then, to create volumetric light, or “god rays,” Bethesda worked with Nvidia to make the world feel more alive. Notably, Bethesda has retained close relations with Nvidia ever since the graphics company aided in the development of the water effects in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, which released in 2002. Volumetric light, which Bethesda describes as “spilling across the scene,” is heavily reliant on the GPU’s hardware tessellation. Put simply, it adds extra depth to the atmosphere.

Thanks to the material system, when rain falls, the world’s surface is realistically wetted. Likewise, the new cloth simulation system lets flowing objects like cloth, hair, and vegetation blow around in the wind as they would in real life.

And, since the player can travel around freely, regardless of time or place, there have been dynamic post-process techniques put into place solely to improve the color vibrancy of particular sceneries for what Bethesda says is “maximum emotional impact.”

That’s not all that’s been improved, however, as Bethesda has released a complete list of technical upgrades to its Creation Engine as denoted below:

  • Tiled Deferred Lighting
  • Temporal Anti-Aliasing
  • Screen Space Reflections
  • Bokeh Depth of Field
  • Screen Space Ambient Occlusion
  • Height Fog
  • Motion Blur
  • Filmic Tonemapping
  • Custom Skin and Hair Shading
  • Dynamic Dismemberment using Hardware Tessellation
  • Volumetric Lighting
  • Gamma Correct Physically Based Shading

Best of all, whether you’re playing on PC, Xbox One, or PS4, all of these features will be present when Fallout 4 launches next Tuesday.

Fallout 4 is finally getting free Xbox Series X and PS5 upgrades
New Fallout 4 Creation Club mod content coming with the Xbox Series X and PS5 launch.

Bethesda has confirmed that the current-gen update for Fallout 4 will finally release on April 25.

That's good timing, as a Fallout TV show just released on Amazon Prime this month to positive buzz. Fallout 4 came out for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox One in 2015, and this definitely looks like it will be the most substantial update the game has received since its last expansion was released.

Bethesda turns Skyrim into a mod platform with new Creations feature
Aldmeri Anti-Mage is one of the mods available through Bethesda Game Studios Creations in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is over 12 years old at this point, but a hefty Bethesda Game Studios update that dropped today is meant to revitalize its modding community. It turns the game into an easily accessible platform with user-made mode content, even on console.

Building on what was once the Bethesda Creation Club, this new feature is called Bethesda Game Studios Creations. Its first implementation is in Skyrim Special Edition and Skyrim Anniversary Edition across PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, and PS5. Bethesda created a Creations storefront where players can buy and download mods that add anything from items to new characters and questlines. It's also letting Skyrim mod creators join its Verified Creator program so they can set prices for their mods and earn royalties from the sales.

Basim perched on a ledge overlooking Baghdad

In a company interview with CEO Yves Guillemot posted on the Ubisoft website Thursday, the executive reveals that there are remakes of Assassin's Creed games in the works, although he doesn't specify which ones.

"Players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we've created in the past and modernize them," he says, implying that it could pertain to games made before Odyssey. "There are worlds in some of our older Assassin's Creed games that are still extremely rich."
