BioShock 2 Launches Worldwide

2K Games has officially thrown the doors open on BioShock 2, the company’s followup to the very popular (and 2007 “Game of the Year”) BioShock. Bioshock 2 features both single-player and multiplayer modes and aims to bring new levels of addiction—and “artistic achievement”—to the first-person shooter genre.

“BioShock represented a watershed moment in the gaming industry when it illustrated that games, like feature films, can be viewed as art—both in art design and in the rich depth of the narrative,” said 2K president Christoph Hartmann, in a statement. “Most importantly, the media are stating what we’ve known all along; that whether or not you’ve played the original, BioShock 2 is a worthy successor to one of the best games of all-time that should not be missed.”

The new game puts players into the boots (and diving suit) of the character Big Daddy; players must traverse through the grandiose ruins of the city Rapture as some evil force starts to recreate the Little Sisters utopia under the ocean. Players must figure out the mystery while surviving onslaughts from genetically modified Splicers—and not getting killed themselves.

BioShock 2’s multiplayer mode steps back into a prequel, set in the time period before Rapture descended into chaos: players take on the role of a Plasmid test subject and engage in “frantically paced” battles through some of the locations from the original BioShock game.

BioShock 2 is available now for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and WIndows PC: it is rated M fo “Mature” by the ESRB. Xbox and PS3 editions carry suggested retail prices of $59.99; the Windows version runs $49.99. Special Editions are available for $99.99.

Unlock Developer Menu

When a game is still being made, developers often include a special menu they can access to change various settings on the fly to test things out. Typically, these menus are then disabled for the full release since they would essentially allow anyone to cheat and break the game. The Unlock Developer Menu mod brings that feature back so you can change all sorts of options with ease. You can think of it like accessing a command menu, only it's much more user-friendly. With it, you can do things like spawn weapons, zombies, and plague hearts, and add followers and enclaves just by hitting F2. The only thing to be aware of is that not all the functions are enabled, and the modder isn't planning on fixing them since it was not created by them, only reenabled.

Unless you're a lefty, you may not notice that every shooter, including Counter-Strike 2, always has you playing as a right-handed character. While it may not seem like a big deal, it just feels awkward for people who primarily use their left hands to get used to seeing games that way, especially when previous versions of this game allowed you to play as a southpaw. And, if you're playing at the highest level, swapping hands can make peaking corners much easier. While it was missing for almost the first year of the game, Counter -trike 2 has finally allowed players to swap hands and play however is more natural and comfortable for them. If you want to set your character to always play either left- or right-handed, the best way is to set your preferred handedness in the settings. Open up your settings and go into Game > Item and scroll down to the Preferred Viewmodel Left/Right Handedness option. The drop-down menu will let you choose between right and left so you will always default to that view.

There's no denying that Counter-Strike 2 is one of the most hardcore and competitive FPS games on PC. One wrong move in this game can force you to wait out the rest of the round and leave your team a player down.

With such a long history and dedicated playerbase, the skill ceiling is intimidatingly high and you may not be able to keep up with those you're matched up against. Bot matches give you a chance to practice your skills and strategies in a less-stressful environment, though the challenge they provide may not be exactly right for you. There is a way to tweak them so you can find the perfect targets, but it's not very intuitive.
