The only Nintendo Switch deal you need to see for Black Friday

Julian Chokkattu/Digital Trends

Black Friday is over and Cyber Monday deals are approaching, with an influx of shoppers saving money throughout the next four days, especially with all of the gaming deals happening now. While some deals are certainly better than others, there is no denying that video game consoles are among the most desirable products during Black Friday. Unfortunately, Nintendo tends to avoid discounting the Switch during the shopping holiday and deals that are offered do not provide massive savings when compared to its original retail price.

While the Nintendo Switch, a hybrid gaming console, has been out for nearly three years, there are not a ton of bundles or special promotions available. But there is one Nintendo Switch deal worth considering if you are at all interested in picking up this eighth-generation gaming system. For $200, you can pick up a Nintendo Switch Lite gaming console bundle, which comes with a trNintendo Switch Lite with a travel case bundleavel case at Walmart.

With this Switch Lite deal, you can pick up a turquoise-colored unit as well as a black-and-red travel case. While the savings are not exactly massive, you are saving yourself $10 extra dollars, which is how much the travel case retails for.

Released earlier this year, Nintendo Switch Lite is drastically different from its predecessor and should not be viewed as a replacement for the original Nintendo Switch model. Instead, the Nintendo Switch Lite serves as an alternative for the Nintendo Switch as this console is strictly a handheld-only variant of the console. Its current retail price is $200 and the console itself is a single unit with integrated Joy-Cons built onto it. Unlike the standard Joy-Cons, the Switch Lite’s design includes a regular D-Pad instead of the separate four directional pads found on left-sided Joy-Cons. While its battery life is shorter, it does provide longer playtime compared to the original Nintendo Switch model released in 2017. Other caveats include the limitations of the hardware and that the console does not support external controllers, nor does this variant offer support for select games that require the Switch to be in docked mode.

While the Nintendo Switch Lite is not the traditional way to experience the gaming system, this model is still valuable if you prefer gaming on the go and is a cheaper alternative to the original Nintendo Switch console.

Black Friday is a ways off, but that doesn't mean it's too early to think about deal-shopping later this year.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder didn’t need a Nintendo Switch 2 to look fantastic
Bowser terrorizes Mario and company in Super Mario Wonder.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is out now, and it’s a true Nintendo hit. Mario’s latest adventure was met with a wave of glowing reviews earlier this week, and it’s easy to see why. The 2D platformer is both a reinvention and a return to form for Nintendo’s most important franchise, bringing transformative new gameplay ideas to an age-old formula. There’s some tasty icing on that cake too: It just so happens to be one of the best-looking video games of the year.

While it's not the glitzy spectacle of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 or the photorealistic achievement that is Forza Motorsport, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a sight to behold in its own right. That’s thanks to vibrant cartoon visuals, detailed animations, and painterly backdrops that bring depth to the 2D Flower Kingdom. It’s a marvelous feat, and it was all accomplished on the same aging console that has left gamers begging for an upgrade. While that Nintendo Switch successor may be right around the corner, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a reminder that strong art direction can be just as impactful as raw power.
Looking wonderful
Just looking at out-of-context screenshots, Super Mario Bros. Wonder might not look that much different from New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. It’s only when you first boot it up that you’re drawn into a deceptively beautiful world. That’s apparent from the very first stage, as Mario stands against a sea of green and blue hills rolling in the distance. Star-shaped trees tower above him, with their simple leaves lightly blowing in the wind. The Flower Kingdom instantly feels alive in ways that even some of the biggest-budget 3D games aren’t able to accomplish.

This hidden Switch feature will change the way you play Nintendo games
Two players play Nintendo Switch.

Any time I discuss the latest Switch game with my friends, I usually hear the same critique: “I wish I could remap the controls.” Major Switch exclusives like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Metroid Dread are seriously lacking in control customization, which can be frustrating if your brain has a specific idea of what a gamepad layout is.

There’s a fairly good excuse as to why those games don’t include controller customization options, though. It's because of a system-level controller remap option tucked deep away in the Nintendo Switch’s settings menu. If you didn’t know that existed (as few of my friends seem to), get ready for a solution to all your control issues that’s been hiding in plain sight all this time.

Pick up these Nintendo games you can only get on Wii U and 3DS
xenoblade and pokemon picross headline eshop update chronicles x nintendo wii u

The Nintendo Switch has one of the greatest first-party lineups of any Nintendo console. In addition to several outstanding original games, a lot of awesome Wii U games like Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, and Mario Kart 8 finally got all the love they deserved when they were ported to the Switch. Even some 3DS games like Miitopia have made their way to Nintendo Switch. Still, that isn't all-encompassing, so when the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShops are discontinued on March 27, we will lose access to some amazing first-party Nintendo games that aren't available elsewhere.
From black sheep in their respective series to new IP that tests out some novel ideas, four Wii U and four 3DS games that are still platform exclusives stuck out the most to us. If you're specifically looking for Nintendo-published games to pick up before the 3DS and Wii U eShops stop allowing the purchase of new games, consider picking up one of these titles.
Xenoblade Chronicles X

Considering the rest of the Xenoblade Chronicles series is on Nintendo Switch, it's very surprising that Xenoblade Chronicles X has not made the jump over yet. This RPG stands as the black sheep of the series, with a more gritty style and tone, mech suits, and a plot about humans who crash land on an alien planet after escaping Earth, which might be why it didn't come over before the trilogy was completed. Xenoblade Chronicles X is a great game in its own right, though, and also makes ample use of the Wii U GamePad for its detailed map and menus. As such, it's a worthwhile Wii U pickup for those who like to play games uniquely tailored to the system and enjoy seeing what the oddball entries in game franchises have to offer.
