Call of Duty: Ghosts ‘Devastation’ DLC to tussle with… Predator?

The next downloadable content drop for Call of Duty: Ghosts is called Devastation, and it appears to feature the Predator alien – or some riff on it – from the 1987 sci-fi/horror Hollywood classic Predator, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. The hint comes from a brief video shared on the official Call of Duty Instagram feed with the text “If it bleeds…” and a whole bunch of relevant hashtags attached to it.

“If it bleeds” is a reference to a Schwarzenegger line from the original film: “If it bleeds, we can kill it,” he said following the discovery that the wounded alien left a blood trail. The teaser shared on Instagram follows some doomed, out of breath soldier as he wanders around an overgrown jungle ruin. The Predator alien’s distinctive clicking vocalizations are audible in the background, and a shimmering, humanoid form – again, like a cloaked Predator alien – runs directly at our soldier just as he turns a corner.

It’s not clear how the Predator (or whatever the Call of Duty equivalent turns out to be) factors into Devastation, but it appears that it’s not part of the new “Mayday” Extinction map, which is Ghosts‘ wave-based alien survival mode. The official description for Mayday establishes the setting as a “ghost ship in the South Pacific.” Whereas the clip shared on Instagram suggests the Predator nod appears on the new Ruins multiplayer map.

It’s not the first time Hollywood horror has crossed over into the Call of Duty-verse. The first Ghosts map pack, Onslaught, featured Halloween monster Michael Myers as a multiplayer map-specific Field Order bonus; it’s likely that this Predator nod will work the same way. Further back, the 2011 Escalation map pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops added the Zombies map Call of the Dead to the game, which featured Hollywood stars (and horror fixtures) Sarah Michelle Gellar, Robert Englund, Danny Trejo, and Michael Rooker as the playable survivors, and legendary Night of the Living Dead director George A. Romero as a boss monster.

Devastation is the second map pack for Ghosts, and it’s coming to Xbox Live on April 3, with other platforms to follow at a later date. The add-on includes four multiplayer maps (Behemoth, Collision, Unearthed, and the aforementioned Ruins), the new Extinction map, and the Ripper, a 2-in-1 SMG/assault rifle. The Ripper is actually available right now to Ghosts Season Pass holders on Xbox Live.

Call of Duty is one of the most successful video game franchises of all time. The original Call of Duty set a new standard for first-person shooters, the series' online multiplayer work has been a must-play for gamers for nearly two decades, and Warzone has been one of the top battle royale experiences of late.

The series has covered a lot of warfare, from World War II to futuristic fictional wars in 2187, but never in any set order. Players have been bounced around from era to era with each annual COD release and even revisited the same conflicts multiple times from different perspectives through direct sequels and remakes.

Call of Duty: Warzone is finally coming to mobile in March
Gameplay from Call of Duty: Warzone mobile

Activision's popular battle royale game Call of Duty: Warzone is making the jump to mobile in March. Specifically, it launches for iOS and Android devices on March 21.

This is a separate game from Tencent's Call of Duty: Mobile, which is currently available on the App Store and Google Play Store. Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is made in-house by several Activision teams, including Beenox, Digital Legends, Solid State Studios, and Shanghai Studios. Further signifying that connection is that Warzone Mobile has shared progression with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and the PC and console versions of Warzone. Payers can level up the same weapons, access content from the BlackCell Battle Pass and store, and gain XP on the same account across all three games. Warzone Mobile will also have full controller support, although it will have a virtual controller overlay that's highly customizable.
