Treyarch took Gamescom as an opportunity to reveal some of the specific features that PC gamers can look forward to in the Windows port of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, which is set to arrive on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on November 6, 2015 (with PS3 and Xbox 360 versions following at a later date). The promised features include:

  • 100 percent Ranked Dedicated Servers
  • 2-Player Split Screen
  • Seamless Game Controller Support
  • Strong GPU scaling, SLI and Crossfire Optimizations, and 4K monitor support make the game look and run great at full 4K resolution
  • FOV Slider
  • Framerate Cap Slider
  • Improved Text Chat features available in-game and also now in lobbies.
  • Fantastic Steam Trading Cards – collect them all!
  • Treyarch Anti-Cheat (TAC)

In light of some high profile disasters with recent AAA PC ports (most recently the Batman: Arkham Knight debacle), Treyarch has been firm in its professed desire to provide a fully-supported experience for PC gamers as well as their console brethren. This past Spring Treyarch head Mark Lamia told Polygon “if you’ve really invested in your rig, we want it to pay off,” emphasizing features such as 4K resolution support for high-end PCs and optimization for mid- to low-end setups.

This past Spring Treyarch also revealed the targeted minimum PC specifications for the game, far earlier than is normal for a game coming out in November. Apart from hefty memory requirements compared to other AAA PC releases this year, Black Ops 3‘s requirements are more or less par for the course. The recommended spec is still on the way, as the developer reiterated in the Gamescom announcement:

“As we add more optimizations and advanced graphics features, we’re re-evaluating our recommended spec, so stay tuned. Rest assured that our goal is to provide the best performance across the widest range of machines possible.”

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 continues Treyarch’s blockbuster FPS sub-franchise, taking the series into a dystopian near future featuring cybernetic augmentation, introducing superhuman abilities similar to last year’s Call of Duty: Advanced WarfareBlack Ops and Black Ops 2 are among the best selling games of all time on any platform, following closely behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for best-selling first-person shooters of all time, so anticipation runs high for the upcoming release.

Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is out to eliminate mobile gaming’s stigma

Activision may be under new ownership at Xbox, but that’s not slowing down its flagship series. After a few years in development, Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is finally launching worldwide under the Microsoft banner. It’s a major moment for the shooter series that’s endured multiple industry changes over its long lineage. The new mobile game is the latest evolution for Call of Duty, bringing a high-quality battle royale experience to phones.

The importance of that evolution isn’t lost on Chris Plummer, the co-head of mobile at Activision. In an interview with Digital Trends ahead of Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile’s launch, Plummer painted a picture of how much has changed in the game industry since Call of Duty Mobile launched in 2019. An industry-shifting war between Epic Games and Apple, an enormous acquisition that’s turned Xbox into a mobile king, and a gradual shift in the general attitude towards mobile games -- all of that has led to this moment. Plummer believes that the old days of players bemoaning cash-grab mobile games are coming to an end. The industry just needed its killer app; he believes Warzone Mobile could be that game.

Call of Duty: Warzone is finally coming to mobile in March
Gameplay from Call of Duty: Warzone mobile

Activision's popular battle royale game Call of Duty: Warzone is making the jump to mobile in March. Specifically, it launches for iOS and Android devices on March 21.

This is a separate game from Tencent's Call of Duty: Mobile, which is currently available on the App Store and Google Play Store. Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is made in-house by several Activision teams, including Beenox, Digital Legends, Solid State Studios, and Shanghai Studios. Further signifying that connection is that Warzone Mobile has shared progression with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and the PC and console versions of Warzone. Payers can level up the same weapons, access content from the BlackCell Battle Pass and store, and gain XP on the same account across all three games. Warzone Mobile will also have full controller support, although it will have a virtual controller overlay that's highly customizable.
