Classic giant-monster game Rampage will get its own movie

Well, one thing’s for sure about the news that classic ’80s video game Rampage is being adapted into a movie: it makes a lot more sense than Battleship.

New Line Cinema announced this week that it plans to adapt Midway Games’ popular monster mash-up into a feature film, with A Nightmare on Elm Street and Final Destination co-producer John Rickard producing the film and meeting with potential writers now.

In the game, players controlled one of three people transformed into giant monsters — an ape, a lizard, and a werewolf — as they destroy a city and fend off military attacks. In order to advance to the next level, players were required to smash buildings, eat civilians, and attack the helicopters, tanks, and other military vehicles trying to stop their, well… rampage.

The game spawned several sequels and spin-off titles, with the most recent being 2006’s Rampage: Total Destruction, released for the GameCube and PlayStation 2, and later ported to the Wii.

In the announcement of project at The Hollywood Reporter, it’s indicated that the studio plans to make a film inspired by the “title and the visuals of the game” in “the vein and tone of Ghostbusters and Independence Day” — which could mean a very loose adaptation at best.

But really, as long as there are giant monsters destroying things, will anyone really care?

Fortnite’s Rocket Racing is so fun, it could have been its own game
rocket racing hands on impressions jumping through air

Yesterday, Fortnite began its biggest expansion yet by dropping Lego Fortnite, a full survival crafting game that's playable for free within Fortnite. It was a pleasant surprise, but it isn’t the best piece of new content coming to the live-service juggernaut this week. That honor goes to Rocket Racing, an arcade racing game from the developers of Rocket League that’s available in Fortnite today.

This isn’t a simple kart racer that anyone could have put together in Fortnite’s creative mode. It’s a full-throated, free-to-play game that features 26 tracks at launch and some surprisingly deep driving systems. While Lego Fortnite may have had trouble standing on its own two feet outside of the Fortnite client, Rocket Racing could very well have launched as its own game -- and it still would be the best racing game of its type this year.

South Park is getting a new game next year, and it’s a 3D action game
Cartman in South Park: Snow Day!

A brand new South Park game was shown during today's THQ Nordic Digital Showcase 2023. South Park: Snow Day! is a 3D isometric action game that supports multiplayer and will release next year.
SOUTH PARK: SNOW DAY! | Game Reveal Trailer
South Park has a somewhat rocky history with video games. Things started out with some bad titles in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but Ubisoft released the solid RPGs South Park: The Stick of Truth and South Park: The Fractured But Whole throughout the 2010s. THQ Nordic, which has dipped its toe into licensed games with two SpongeBob titles, first teased a new South Park game at the end of last year's showcase. We hadn't heard about the game again until today when the announcement for South Park: Snow Day! kicked off this year's presentation.
As its title suggests, South Park: Snow Day! follows Cartman, Kyle, Stan, and Kenny as they play with each other on a snow day and take things way too far, turning the town into a war zone. Strange Scaffold's Xalavier Nelson Jr. confirmed that he provided writing on the game. We see a little bit of gameplay in its reveal trailer, and it looks like a multiplayer isometric action game in the style of something like Diablo 4 or Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. Unlike the last two South Park games, this one's in 3D.

Outside of that, we don't know much else about South Park: Snow Day! Hopefully, we'll learn more at Gamescom 2023 and as it approaches release. South Park: Snow Day! will be released for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch in 2024.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 finally gets its fall release date at Summer Game Fest
Spider-Man Peter Parker and Miles Morales fighting Kraven and henchmen

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 officially has a release date. During the Summer Game Fest, Insomniac Games revealed that the game is scheduled to release on October 20 as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. The stream also featured a few new details about the game, including new information about its villains.

Spider-Man 2 recently appeared at the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, so it wasn't surprising that there wasn't any new footage at the Summer Game Fest. However, Insomniac presented new concept art, including one with Peter Parker and Miles Morales fighting side by side and another with the two Spider-Mans fighting Venom.
