Once an Xbox One exclusive, D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die is out now on PC

The creative mind behind 2010’s survival horror epic Deadly Premonition has released the first chapter of his murder mystery adventure game D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die for Windows via Steam.

D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die tells the strange story of David Young, a detective who pursues his wife’s murderer through a series of outlandish encounters with criminals, stewardesses, and the shapeshifting, violence-prone cat-woman he shares an apartment with.

For anyone familiar with director Swery65’s previous work Deadly Premonition, it’s business as usual. Noted for its bizarre storytelling style and Twin Peaks influence, Deadly Premonition holds a Guinness World Record for the dubious honor of “most critically polarizing survival horror game.”

D4 was originally designed as a showpiece for the Xbox One’s improved Kinect peripheral, and was featured during publisher Microsoft’s E3 presentation in 2013. The game saw a low-key digital release via the Xbox Live Marketplace last year, and was later available as a free download for Xbox Live Gold subscribers as part of the Games With Gold program.

In addition to Kinect controls, D4 also features optional controller support, making this week’s PC release possible. Currently, only the first “season” of content for D4 is available, and the story ends on a tantalizing cliffhanger. Director Swery65 has expressed interest in continuing the series, provided that sales for the first season prove adequate.

“I would love to launch a new game on PC first if I had the chance,” Swery stated in a recent interview with Polygon. “But for the time being, my top priority is D4 and the continuation of that series in season 2. I’m putting all my power into that right now.”

The PC version of D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die is available at a discounted rate of $13.49 during its launch week.

Ubisoft confirms Assassin’s Creed remakes are in the works

In a company interview with CEO Yves Guillemot posted on the Ubisoft website Thursday, the executive reveals that there are remakes of Assassin's Creed games in the works, although he doesn't specify which ones.

"Players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we've created in the past and modernize them," he says, implying that it could pertain to games made before Odyssey. "There are worlds in some of our older Assassin's Creed games that are still extremely rich."

Surfaced patent shows what an Xbox streaming console would’ve looked like

There have been a few Xbox devices that have never come to fruition, one of which was Keystone, a prototype for an affordable game streaming device you could hook up to your TV or monitor. Thanks to a surfaced patent, we've gotten an even closer look at what it would've potentially looked like.

The patent, first spotted by Windows Central, gives us a more complete view of the device. We've previously seen the Keystone in the flesh. Microsoft Gaming head Phil Spencer is known for hiding teases and interesting collectibles on the shelf in his office. In a 2022 X (formerly Twitter) post congratulating Bethesda on Fallout's 25th anniversary, you can see a small white device on the top shelf that's actually a Keystone prototype. Xbox told Digital Trends that it was a version of the device made before it decided to "refocus our efforts on a new approach.”
