Someone is playing ‘Dark Souls 3’ using bananas as a controller

There’s an unofficial internet law called “Rule 34” that states that anything and everything you could ever think of has already been made into pornography. Now, judging by recent events, there clearly needs to be another rule stating that every object in the world can be turned into a video game controller. The latest: A bunch of bananas.

YouTuber, Twitch streamer, and Reddit user ATwerkingYoshi has apparently wired 10 bananas as the various buttons needed to control Dark Souls 3 and decided to tackle the infamously challenging game using only the fruit as his input method.

ATwerkingYoshi posted a GIF of this feat to the gaming section on Reddit in a topic titled “Playing Dark Souls 3 with Bananas is…. Bananas.” The GIF shows his Dark Souls 3 character fighting the Abyss Watchers, arguably one of the game’s toughest boss fights, while in one corner his hands carefully touch and tap several bananas with wires poking out of them. With zero healing estus flasks remaining and the boss’s health still high, he doesn’t appear to be doing too well, which to be fair is understandable.

He explained this bizarre sight in the comments. “Long story short, I wired 10 bananas to correspond each controller button (WASD, left & right click, Roll, and Heal),” ATwerkingYoshi wrote. “This is in fact the hardest run yet and most of the bananas are already bruised.”

“Best $2 I’ve ever spent,” he added.

ATwerkingYoshi has carved out a niche on YouTube and Twitch mainly by playing games ranging from Dark Souls 3 to Star Fox 64 using a Dance Dance Revolution dance pad as a controller. He’s also branched out to other control methods, like a Wii steering wheel controller and several bags of Doritos.

Reddit commenters offered some creative suggestions for future challenges, including playing with Bop-It toys and walking on Legos for input, which ATwerkingYoshi said is his favorite idea yet.

In April 2024, Nintendo will discontinue online services across its Wii U and 3DS consoles. While the eShops for both systems were shut down in March 2023, this will remove the online functionality of many apps and games, making gaming on either of these platforms an almost entirely offline experience. As a result, many games on those systems will lose important features and never be quite the same to play afterward. So, you'll need to get some gaming time in by next April if you want to refresh and preserve the memories of playing online on these two underdog Nintendo platforms.
While the aforementioned eShop closures make it impossible to buy new games digitally, plenty of games that you likely already own physical copies of or already had downloaded have online features that won't work properly come April 2024. As such, we recommend you play the following games online before the discontinuation of those services next year.
Kid Icarus Uprising

Kid Icarus Uprising is mostly remembered for its entertaining story, charismatic characters, and odd controls, but it also features a surprisingly fun multiplayer experience in Together Mode. In multiplayer, up to six players can use powerful weapons and abilities from the main adventure in one of two modes. Free-for-all lets players loose on a map, tasking them with racking up the most kills within a set time limit. Light vs. Dark is more complex, as two teams of three face off until enough players are defeated that one respawns as an angel; when that powered-up angel is killed, the match is over.
While far from balanced, Kid Icarus Uprising's Together Mode is one of the most entertaining competitive multiplayer experiences exclusive to 3DS. It can be played locally, using bots to fill in empty spots, so thankfully it won't stop working entirely. Still, it's not easy in 2023 to come across multiple people near you who have copies of Kid Icarus Uprising and want to play. As such, check out this cult classic 3DS game's hidden gem of a mode before praying that the rumors of a remaster eventually become true.

One of the more rare items you can find in Baldur's Gate 3 is the mysterious Soul Coins. If you're lucky enough to happen upon one, knowing what it even does is one thing, but trying to find more will most likely leave you stumped. What do Soul Coins do?

If you were lucky enough to find a Soul Coin on your own, even reading the description wouldn't give you much clue as to what it is or how you're supposed to use it. All it says is "Strange, incomprehensible whispers emanate from the coin, pervading your mind with rage and despair. These coins can power Infernal Engines." Not very helpful, save for that final extra line.

Where to find the Mirror of Loss

The massive circular mirror is something you will naturally come across if you're following Shadowheart's companion questline. Starting in Act 2, you will be able to go find it in the Underdark, more specifically the Temple of Shar's Chamber of Loss. It will cost you 1,000 gold to enter, so it's best to know what you're getting for such a steep price.
