Dead By Daylight celebrates its birthday with a dating sim

Dead by Daylight hosted its sixth-anniversary event and unveiled a ton of new seasonal content coming to the hit multiplayer horror game. The stream brought some surprises, including an anime beach episode-themed dating sim and an in-game crossover with the anime and manga series Attack on Titan.

The game’s surprise dating simulator is being developed by Psyop, the team behind I Love You, Colonel Sanders! A Finger Lickin’ Good Dating Simulator. This cutesy spin-off called Hooked on You, allows players to drop the fear and unleash their thirst by hooking up with reimagined killers of the franchise like The Trapper, The Spirit, The Huntress, and The Wraith.

As for Dead by Daylight proper, the game’s new season is called Roots of Dread and it features a fresh killer. The Dredge is a Lovecraftian monster inspired by The Boogeyman. This creature of your nightmares has the ability to teleport two and from lockers, which are known as one of the only potentially safe spaces in the game, making Dredge a new twist on the Dead by Daylight formula.

A new killer wouldn’t be complete without a new survivor: Haddie Kaur. The character with the ability to see holes in the space between our world and the game’s horror universe. The developers have yet to reveal how those powers tie into her perks.

Along with all this content, crossovers are returning to Dead by Daylight. Not only is Attack on Titan making its series debut with cosmetics, but Resident Evil is returning with a new chapter called “Project W.”  While we got a glimpse at a possible Raccoon City stage, not many details were shared beyond that.

Dead by Daylight‘s new season, Roots of Dread, releases on June 7.

Behaviour Interactive announced today that multiplayer horror game Dead by Daylight will cross over with Remedy Entertainment's Alan Wake later this month.

Alan Wake is just the latest of several crossover characters to come by Dead by Daylight. Just last year, the multiplayer horror game crossed over with franchises like Alien and Child's Play; Nicolas Cage also came to the game as a survivor. This Alan Wake crossover feels particularly timely, as Alan Wake 2 launched in October 2023 to critical acclaim, bringing Remedy Entertainment's cult classic horror franchise into the mainstream.

If you love Dead Cells, you need to try this sci-fi roguelike next

I'm probably not alone when I say that I can't get enough Dead Cells. The excellent roguelike has been a mainstay on my PC and Switch since it released. I even have an arcade cabinet in my apartment that runs it. Whether I'm jumping in for a random run or checking out its excellent Return to Castlevania DLC, I'm always down for more of its 2D action formula. Of course, there's only so much of it I can play, especially as developer Motion Twin gets to work on its next game, Windblown.

Luckily, there's an easy way to fill that gap, even if its a temporary fix. Trinity Fusion is a new roguelike by Angry Mob Games that exits early access today and sticks very close to the Dead Cells playbook. It has players hacking their way through 2D environments, building a character with temporary boosts each run, and nabbing some permanent abilities with acquired currencies. Though its not as rich with secrets and certainly doesn't look as striking, its worth digging into for anyone itching for another game that'll have them saying "one more run" for hours.

Trinity Fusion replaces the crunchy pixel art fantasy of Dead Cells with something smoother and more futuristic -- it's as if Angry Mob Games dipped its inspiration in chrome. Players are dropped into a sci-fi story that vaguely involves the multiverse. It's a whole lot of mumbo jumbo (the 1.0 update adds even more story for those who love lore logs). Rather than going with a pixel art style like some of its peers, Trinity Fusion uses smoother three-dimensional visuals. It winds up looking like a less polished version of Metroid Dread with flat world and character designs. Though that's a bit dull, it does at least bake in some excellent, atmospheric tunes that sound like they could have been pulled out of a 2D Metroid game.

Behaviour Interactive revealed The Casting of Frank Stone, a new narrative-focused single-player horror title set in the Dead by Daylight universe, at The Game Awards 2023.

Dead by Daylight has stayed relevant in the competitive landscape of live-service multiplayer titles in no small part due to the rollout of horror films' most iconic characters, as well as its addicting gameplay. For as popular as this asymmetrical game centered around four survivors attempting to avoid and escape one powerful killer --such as Chucky, Ghostface, and even Nic Cage -- has become, a strong narrative has never been a key ingredient in its success. We already knew the universe would be expanded with a Blumhouse-produced film adaptation, however, we now know that players looking to fully engross themselves in a new original story in that universe will finally get that chance.
