Steam launches new trial service featuring a free 90-minute Dead Space demo

Steam is rolling out a new feature that allows developers and publishers to offer limited-time free trials for their games. The first title to have one is EA Motive’s Dead Space remake.

Motive released its remake of Dead Space in January to critical acclaim. Now, almost four months after launch, EA announced it is running a 20% off sale for Dead Space on Steam and is offering a free trial through May 29. Over the next two weeks, anyone with a Steam account can try out Dead Space for an hour and a half for free. Players do have to download the full game before starting the free trial and can then choose to purchase the full game once their 90 minutes are up.

Free periods for games aren’t exactly a new thing for Steam, but typically these came in the form of free weekends where players would get access to an entire game, like Crusader Kings III, for several days. From a publisher’s perspective, these aren’t the best fit for single-player games like Dead Space, as players could conceivably get through the 12-hour horror adventure over the course of a weekend and there isn’t a dedicated for interested players to try. This new free trial system allows EA to make the game free for a limited time but cut players off after 90 minutes, potentially drawing them in and convincing them to buy the full game in the process.

Dead Space is available now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game’s Steam sale and free trial will be available until May 29.

Dead Space will have Doom Eternal-esque dismemberment
Issac stands tall in the Dead Space remake.

After the Dead Space remake was revealed at this year's EA Play Live event, today's livestream finally gave us a look at the game, albeit an extremely early one. The stream, hosted by developer Motive Studios, which has previously worked on Star Wars: Squadrons and Star Wars Battlefront 2, detailed what players can expect from the upcoming remaster of the original Dead Space title.

The stream presented a decent first look at one of the environments in Dead Space, showing a major upgrade from the game originally released in 2008. Dead Space is using EA's Frostbite engine, which has been used across multiple EA franchises, including Battlefield. Specifically, the remaster has advanced lighting techniques and other effects, like smoke and fog.

Dead Space Livestream: When it airs, how to watch, what to expect
Isaac Clarke from the new Dead Space.

After being revealed during this year's EA Play Live 2021 event, developer Motive Studios is finally ready to share more about its remake of the cult-classic horror title Dead Space. Over Twitter, the developer announced a livestream focused on the game. Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming Dead Space livestream.
When is the Dead Space livestream?
The Dead Space livestream is set to start at 10 a.m. PT on August 31. The event likely won't have a pre- or post-show either, so don't worry about sticking around or getting to the stream early for any extra details.
Where to watch the Dead Space livestream?
According to Motive's post on Twitter, the stream will be exclusive to Twitch, with no other streaming services being mentioned.
What will be shown at the Dead Space livestream?
The tweet about the stream from Motive itself was sparse on details, something that we can likely expect to be reflected in the stream itself. We're set to get "a very early look at the development of Dead Space." That makes a lot of sense considering how recently the game was announced. However, that statement also dashes any hopes of the game releasing this year, solidifying it for either a 2022 or 2023 release at the earliest.

Likewise, GameSpot has reported that the stream will also include some "special guests" from the Dead Space community. This group is part of the Dead Space Community Council, a group of fans EA has been consulting with while working on the game. The stream will be hosted by Kahlief Adams, host of the popular Spawn on Me podcast, and content creator Jackie Butler.
