Destiny Planet View is like Google Maps in space, with aliens

Read our full Destiny review.

We’ve got just one more week before Bungie unleashes Destiny, but you can start exploring the game’s alien landscapes now with some help from the new Google Technologies-powered Destiny Planet View. Think Google Maps, but on Mars, Venus, and Earth’s moon.

It’s not quite as “3D” as Google Maps tends to be in real life, but that’s understandable given that Destiny Planet View was clearly patched together using in-game screens. It’s a nifty peek at some of the game’s more far-flung environments. You can explore the entire maps, but there’s enough to get a sense of what each planet looks like. There are also locations you can interact with to fill out more details surrounding Destiny‘s lore.

We haven’t fully explored Planet View yet, but the announcement email promises that “a few hidden real-world and in-game incentives” are hidden away on each map. So poke around carefully, and proceed slowly. It’s not like you’ve got anything better to do before Destiny comes to PlayStation and Xbox consoles on September 9, 2014, right?

The Witch Queen made me a healthier Destiny 2 player
Hive Guardians created by the Witch Queen Savathun

I used to be what you might call a Destiny addict. Back in the mid-2010s, I was all-in on the first Destiny game, practically playing it daily. I had a dedicated crew I ran raids with, chased the highest-level gear I could find, and competed in the Crucible like it was a job. I clocked over 400 hours playing the game over the course of a few years, and when Destiny 2 came out in 2017, I started on that same path.

But life changed. My free time became more scarce as I got older and the idea of spending all my time on one game became unrealistic. I had other things I wanted to play and it no longer made sense to keep up with an MMO where the grind was always climbing. I still checked out every major expansion, playing through any new story content, but I began to feel like I wasn’t getting a fulfilling experience if I ignored the grind.

In a company interview with CEO Yves Guillemot posted on the Ubisoft website Thursday, the executive reveals that there are remakes of Assassin's Creed games in the works, although he doesn't specify which ones.

"Players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we've created in the past and modernize them," he says, implying that it could pertain to games made before Odyssey. "There are worlds in some of our older Assassin's Creed games that are still extremely rich."
