Using Discord on PlayStation 5 is about to get a lot easier

Communicating while in a Helldivers 2 party with friends will soon be easier than ever, as PlayStation announced Thursday that it’ll be rolling out built-in Discord voice chat to PlayStation 5 consoles.

While Discord voice chat has been available on the PS5 since last year, you needed to use an outside app on your mobile device or computer to access it. With the latest update, all you’ll need to do is go to the Discord tab on the console after linking your PlayStation and Discord accounts together, then choose the server, channel, or DM you want to join. So no more looking for your phone to start chatting.

The feature will be rolling out over the next few weeks. Unfortunately, those located in the Americas are last on the list. PlayStation is starting with Japan and other Asian countries, then Europe, Australia and New Zealand, the Middle East, and finally, the American continents. No official dates have been set, yet, but once it’s available, make sure you install the latest update.

PlayStation also announced that it’ll be rolling out PlayStation Network profile sharing, allowing users to share their info with a link or QR code through the PS App or a console.

Sony and Discord’s partnership has been gradual. The original announcement was in 2021, with Sony making a minority investment in the company. This was after acquisition talks between Discord and Xbox ended, although Discord integration with the Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One was added later. Notably, players have been able to use integrated console Discord voice chat since 2022.

Over time, Discord has become the de facto video game chat app. That was the case on PC and mobile, but since being added to Xbox and PlayStation, it’s more ubiquitous than ever. Now it just needs to be added to Nintendo Switch and it’ll be everywhere.

Doom: The Dark Ages launches next year, and Xbox is bringing it to PS5

During the June 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft revealed Doom: The Dark Ages. It's a medieval take on the first-person shooter series that's typically set during contemporary times. It's set to launch in 2025 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. The game will also launch on Xbox Game Pass.

Doom: The Dark Ages is a prequel, with the Doomslayer donning animal fur and spikes on his shoulder-blade armor. With his trusty and classic shotgun, he's ready to take down demons. However, he now has a new shield with blades that he can rev up like a chainsaw. The trailer shows the Doomslayer even throwing his shield at them like Captain America. He will also be able to ride a dragon at some point in the game, highlighting the fantasy elements of the game.

During Summer Game Fest 2024, developer S-Game showed off a new gameplay trailer for Phantom Blade Zero, an upcoming action-RPG. A release date wasn't revealed, but the game will be playable at certain upcoming events.

One aspect to note is that the gameplay trailer was all captured in-game, so what was shown is accurate to what the game will look like when playing it. Phantom Blade Zero appears to be a Soulslike game with an emphasis on parrying, similar to games like Rise of the Ronin and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Its monster design and gray color palette tones are reminiscent of Bloodborne.

June 2024 is shaping up to be a pretty great month for PlayStation players. Not only are we coming off an entertaining State of Play showcase, but a new Days of Play initiative surrounding all the video game showcases this month is bringing a lot of new PS Plus additions with it. Many of those games hit PS Plus this week, and three in particular stand out to us.

For owners of Sony's oft-neglected PlayStation VR2, the first game is one of its rare exclusives that take full advantage of the headset's eye-tracking by seeing how often players blink. The next is a new PS Plus Essential game that's a revival of Sega's classic beat-'em-up series for the modern gaming era. Finally, the last title is an atmospheric and eerie fishing game that should entice fans of Lovecraftian horror.
