Writer and producer Drew Goddard is in negotiations to be the showrunner and executive producer of the upcoming Daredevil TV show, according to The Wrap. The Marvel superhero will appear in 13 episodes, all of which will be released on Netflix in 2015.
Goddard is best known for his work with Joss Whedon and J.J. Abrams as a writer and producer in both television and film. His TV writing credits include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Alias, and Lost. Goddard also wrote the films Cloverfield and World War Z. He made his directorial debut with Cabin in the Woods, which he also co-wrote.
The character of Daredevil was created by Stan Lee and first introduced in 1964. Following an accident involving a radioactive substance that left him blind, Matt Murdock discovered his other abilities had been heightened. He went on to became a respected defense lawyer, but uses his martial arts training to defend his neighborhood under the guise of Daredevil, “The Man Without Fear.”
The Daredevil series is one part of the recent deal between the Disney-owned Marvel and Netflix. Along with Daredevil, the streaming service will also produce series based on Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. A mini-series based on The Defenders has also been confirmed.
The current plan is to release a complete season of each show, with the option for more. The episodes will likely follow the pattern that the other Netflix series have, and release the entire season at one time.
Besides Goddard being considered hot in Hollywood right now, his hiring seems like a good fit. More than a year ago in an interview with Collider, Goddard confessed that he grew up a Daredevil fan, and has made no secret of his desire to work with the property.
