EA Access will be free next week on Xbox One

EA Access, a subscription service that allows Xbox One users to play some of the publisher’s biggest releases, has become a significantly better value since it originally launched in 2014. For $5 a month, you have unlimited access to Titanfall, Battlefield Hardline, FIFA 15, and Dragon Age: Inquisition. If you’re still not sure whether or not to give the service a try, EA is offering a free trial next week.

“Get ready for the release of Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 by binging on the original,” says Xbox’s Will Tuttle. “Your characters earned carry over — plus EA Access members get 10% off EA games, and get to play GW2 before it hits shelves.”

The timing of this announcement was certainly designed to get players hooked on PopCap’s shooter. Garden Warfare 2 is currently in open beta, which ends on January 18, the day before the EA Access free week begins. It includes access to the new “Herbal Assault” mode, as well as new characters like “Captain Deadbeard” and “Kernel Corn.” Because your unlocks from the original game carry over into the sequel, it will be interesting to see how many trial users marathon Garden Warfare to get a leg up on the competition.

This isn’t the only recent news regarding EA Access. The service also made its way to PC as “Origin Access,” offering several of the same games as the console program in addition to PC exclusives like SimCity and The Sims 3. Sony has thus far not agreed to include EA Access on PlayStation systems, calling it a poor value back in 2914.

EA Access will be free for all Xbox Live Gold users from January 19 until January 24. Any progress you make in the games will be carried over if you decide to sign up for a subscription.

Microsoft will release the next episode of the Official Xbox Podcast at 12 p.m. PT on Thursday, February 15. We don't know how long this podcast or the announcements within it will take. Historically, episodes of the podcast have lasted anywhere between 25 and 90 minutes

This update will be available on all of the platforms the Official Xbox Podcast typically airs on. If you want to watch it, you can tune into the video posted on YouTube this Thursday. If you're content to just listen, then you'll be able to access the audio version of it on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts. Thankfully, being on all of these platforms means it will likely be available to watch or listen afterward if you can't experience it live.

This follows a tweet from Phil Spencer last week stating that an impending announcement would include information "about our vision for the future of Xbox."

Mobile game controller maker Backbone is releasing a limited-edition version of its Backbone One controller themed around Kojima Productions' Death Stranding. If you pick one up, you'll get a free code for the iOS version of Death Stranding: Director's Cut, will launch alongside the controller next week.

Based on the second-gen USB-C Backbone One controller, this limited-edition controller is themed to the game. The grip on the controller features a beige see-through design reminiscent of the BB Pod from Death Stranding. The bridge of the controller features the logos of both Backbone and Kojima Productions. It's a simple design, yet one that's instantly recognizable as related to Death Stranding and appealing to those who like translucent gaming hardware.

Xbox Game Pass might not be losing a lot of games at the end of January, but the most significant loss is a big one. On January 31, the subscription service is losing Hitman: World of Assassination, which is one of the best stealth gaming experiences out there. Technically, it is a collection of three games’ worth of content, plus an excellent roguelike mode.

Few games can make you feel as clever or as idiotic as IO Interactive’s Hitman games, so World of Assassination is a must-play if you enjoy stealth gameplay and want to see those mechanics explored to their fullest. While the base games are short enough to blaze through in a few sittings, there's way more content here than you could reasonably get through in a week. You better get cracking if you want to try it without paying for the full package.
