EA may join the remastering trend, with Mass Effect series a possible candidate

The popularity of the Mass Effect games might have peaked with the second iteration — the less we say about fan reaction to the third entry’s ending, the better — but that doesn’t mean they aren’t looked back on fondly. So, it’s not surprising that EA is dropping a lot of hints that it may remaster the entire trilogy.

Remastering has actually become quite common in contemporary game making. Whether it’s adding a little HD twist to the pixels from the 16-bit era, or taking a game from just a generation ago and upping the texture resolution, it’s happening a lot. And now we might see it with one of EA’s most beloved series.

Although EA has previously stated that it wasn’t looking to remaster its back catalog and was considering new IPs instead, that might have changed. In a chat with GameInformer, EA’s executive VP for EA Studios, Patrick Soderlund, said that the marketplace had changed in the past year and that the viability of remasters had certainly been proven.

“The honest answer is that we are absolutely actively looking at it. I can’t announce anything today, but you can expect us most likely to follow our fellow partners in Activision and other companies that have done this successfully,” he said.

While he wouldn’t comment on which game or games EA is looking into remastering, the Mass Effect series is an obvious choice. Whatever EA chooses to do, Soderlund said that he wanted to make sure EA did it well, rather than just rushing a re-release to generate some quick funds.

With Mass Effect Andromeda in already in the EA pipeline, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see remastered Mass Effect titles as a pre-order bonus.

Electronic Arts is playing favorites yet again as it raises prices on PC games, but only on Steam.

Since launching its own online marketplace Origin, EA has made it the more attractive offer for fans of its games. In late 2019, the company finally brought its PC titles back to Steam after previously only selling them through Origin. It offered players more choice in how and where they bought games, but the price of some EA's older releases went up in certain regions without a clear explanation.

In a company interview with CEO Yves Guillemot posted on the Ubisoft website Thursday, the executive reveals that there are remakes of Assassin's Creed games in the works, although he doesn't specify which ones.

"Players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we've created in the past and modernize them," he says, implying that it could pertain to games made before Odyssey. "There are worlds in some of our older Assassin's Creed games that are still extremely rich."

Surfaced patent shows what an Xbox streaming console would’ve looked like
An Xbox Series X sits next to both Series S models.

There have been a few Xbox devices that have never come to fruition, one of which was Keystone, a prototype for an affordable game streaming device you could hook up to your TV or monitor. Thanks to a surfaced patent, we've gotten an even closer look at what it would've potentially looked like.

The patent, first spotted by Windows Central, gives us a more complete view of the device. We've previously seen the Keystone in the flesh. Microsoft Gaming head Phil Spencer is known for hiding teases and interesting collectibles on the shelf in his office. In a 2022 X (formerly Twitter) post congratulating Bethesda on Fallout's 25th anniversary, you can see a small white device on the top shelf that's actually a Keystone prototype. Xbox told Digital Trends that it was a version of the device made before it decided to "refocus our efforts on a new approach.”
