Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree story trailer follows Miquella into the Land of Shadow

ELDEN RING Shadow of the Erdtree | Story Trailer

FromSoftware has finally (sort of) revealed the story players will be experiencing in the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. As we learned in the reveal trailer, and from comments made by director Hidetaka Miyazaki, it will follow the story of Miquella of the Haligtree (referred to as Miquella the Kind in the trailer).

The trailer depicts the war that arose after Miquella attempted to create a new Erdtree to help cure his and his sister Malenia’s curses. Miquella “abandoned everything,” including his golden flesh and his fate, according to the trailer. At the end, we see a group of players going into the Land of Shadow to follow him. “Will you walk with us?” the narrator asks.

There are a few other questions that need to be answered as well. Why is Miquella shown as a young man when his curse trapped him in the body of a child? What you’ll be doing specifically is still unknown, but we can assume it involves finding Miquella in some way or following in his footsteps. Either way, you’re going into the Land of Shadow, a whole new map created for the expansion.

The demigod Miquella, who’s crucial to the story setting up the events of Elden Ring, hasn’t actually appeared alive in the game yet, and has only been seen as a statue and as a decrepit hand inside a cocoon. You also learn about him as you explore the world and defeat his sister, Malenia, in one of Elden Ring‘s toughest boss battles.

We expect there to be other trailers in the leadup to Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree’s release on June 21, 2024. It’ll be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Elden Ring’s first DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, is in development
Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree's key art.

Yes, Elden Ring is finally getting DLC. After over a year of speculation since the critically acclaimed game's launch, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is confirmed to be in development.
FromSoftware broke the news via its social media accounts for the game, simply affirming that Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree "is currently in development." No additional release window or story details were shared, but its Japanese website confirms the expansion will come to all of the same platforms as the base game, and the tweet does include one piece of concept art. In it, we see a darkened Erdtree in the distance as a mysterious girl on a horse rides toward it and some ruins. We don't know what any of this means just yet, but the key art appears to tease a darker tone and new character and reaffirm that Shadow of the Erdtree will take place in a massive open world.

Elden Ring was released on February 25, 2022, and it was met with critical acclaim and lots of Game of the Year awards (including Digital Trends' own) because of how FromSoftware adapted its classics Souls series formula into a game with a massive open world that rivaled The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. As many previous FromSoftware games got DLC, fans were hoping that Elden Ring would get the same treatment.
Before now, we've mostly gotten small patches, with a Colosseum-adding update in December being the most notable. Although Shadow of the Erdtree doesn't have a release date, it's a relief for Elden Ring fans to now have some brand-new content to look forward to.
Elden Ring is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Shadow of the Erdtree does not have a release window yet.

Elden Ring’s first significant post-launch content is a PvP Colosseum
Four players fight in an Elden Ring colosseum.

Bandai Namco Entertainment and FromSoftware have confirmed that multiple PvP Colosseums will be added to Elden Ring as part of an update on December 7.
Although Elden Ring is the best-selling and most critically acclaimed game of 2022, its post-launch patches have primarily been focused on balance tweaks and bug fixes. Update 1.08, which drops on December 7, changes that by adding a new way for players to duel each other. Colosseums will now appear in Limgrave, Leyndell, and Caelid, where players can face off against each other. There will be three match types: 1v1 duels, 3v3 team fights, and free-for-alls where only one player can come out on top.
The update will be free to Elden Ring owners across all platforms, and a new trailer gives us a look at these new arenas and the fights that take place within them.

The Colosseums look like fun places for players to test new character builds, show their builds off to others, and test their skills against really experienced players. It seems like this is strictly PvP-focused content though, so players yearning for more single-player content of DLC won't be satiated just yet. Still, this is one of our first very clear indications that FromSoftware and Bandai Namco Entertainment are interested in adding significant, brand-new content to Elden Ring, which is a good sign.
Elden Ring is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The Colosseums will be added as part of Elden Ring Update 1.08, which is set to release on December 7.
