Chicory: A Colorful Tale, Omori, and more indies coming to Switch

Nintendo hosted a new Indie World showcase today. The 20-minute video promised ports of popular titles like Chicory: A Colorful Tale and Omori, while also introducing new titles like Sea of Stars and Loco Motive.

Indie World Showcase 12.15.2021 - Nintendo Switch

Chicory: A Colorful Tale, which we recently called one of this year’s best indie games, lands on Nintendo Switch later today. Players can use a magic paintbrush to draw and paint on almost anything in the game, revealing a world full of color and life behind a black-and-white exterior. Players paint to solve puzzles, help out NPCs, and find the titular Chicory, a master artist and wielder of the paintbrush who has gone missing.

Omori was a surprise hit late last year on PC. The game uses a unique art style from artist, programmer, writer, and designer OMOCAT, as well as turn-based battles, and a variety of colorful characters to tell a deep, sometimes difficult story about mental health. Players can travel between multiple worlds, facing enemies and meeting new friends along the way in their quest to stay afloat. Omori will be available on Switch in spring 2022.

A variety of other interesting indie titles are also coming to Nintendo’s hybrid console. Don’t Starve Together, the multiplayer expansion to the popular Don’t Starve, will be available soon alongside a trial for the original Don’t Starve, which starts today. The previously announced OlliOlli World opened for Switch pre-orders today and showed off a new trailer with unique skate paths and new characters.

Sea of Stars is another highlight. A prequel to The Messenger, it’s a turn-based adventure heavily inspired by Chrono Trigger. Though it won’t arrive until holiday 2022, its trailer announced that it will have music from Yasunori Mitsuda, who also composed music for Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross.

Grounded and Pentiment are the first Xbox games to come to Nintendo Switch
Characters in Grounded game.

During Wednesday's Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase, we learned about two of the Xbox Game Studios titles that are going multiplatform. The games in question are Obsidian Entertainment's Grounded and Pentiment, and the latter will launch tomorrow on Nintendo Switch.

Earlier this year, various leaks and rumors suggested that first-party Xbox exclusives like Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment could make their way over to competing platforms. Microsoft finally addressed the rumors on February 15, confirming that it planned to bring four of its first-party games to non-Xbox platforms over the course of 2024. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer wouldn't say what any of the specific games were at the time, though, stating that "the teams that are building those games have announced plans that are not too far away." It's now clear that Spencer was partially referring to this Nintendo Direct, as two of the games showed up here.

Every rumored Xbox exclusive coming to PS5 and Switch

The video game console market is about to see its biggest shakeup since Sega stopped producing hardware. Xbox's Phil Spencer says that the company will share a "business update" with players next week outlining a new vision for the brand. That news comes after a month of rumors that claimed that some of Xbox's biggest exclusives would be coming to other platforms, including PS5 and Nintendo Switch. The unconfirmed reports sent Xbox loyalists into a panic as fans brace for a possible future where Xbox just produces software instead of physical consoles.

We don't know what's true yet, as credible reports have been lumped in with speculation. Some details seem plausible, while rumors that Xbox will stop making systems altogether are closer to educated guesses. We'll learn more in Xbox's business update, but until then, we've rounded up a list of every Xbox exclusive that's reportedly going multiplatform. Take it all with a grain of salt until Spencer and company unveil the full picture.

If the rumor mill is to be trusted (and it rarely is), we might see an exclusive Xbox game on Nintendo Switch soon. The rumor comes from Nate the Hate, a content creator with a track record of correctly predicting game announcements. According to him, Microsoft is preparing to launch a critically acclaimed Xbox game on Nintendo's platform soon. He's staying tight-lipped on what game that actually is, though.

With no confirmation, gaming fans spent the weekend fantasizing about what Xbox title could be Switch-bound. The most common theory is last year's excellent Hi-Fi Rush, which other would-be insiders have backed up. Still, there's no official word on anything, making it the perfect recipe for getting one's hopes up.
