Fortnite chapter 2, season 6 launched on March 16, 2021, and as you might expect, it has a substantial number of new features. These include the new Zero Crisis Finale single-player event, map changes, a new primal theme, an updated crafting system, and the latest Battle Pass full of cosmetic items for you to unlock.
When you jump in for the first time, it can definitely be overwhelming, especially if you haven’t played Fortnite in a while (or at all). In this guide, we’ll go through all the major new additions in Fortnite season 6 as well as recommendations for things you should definitely check out.

Zero Crisis Finale
As soon as you boot up Fortnite, you’ll be greeted with a brand new cut scene featuring Agent Jones. This new season kicks off the Zero Crisis Finale single-player event, which concludes Agent Jones’ story. After a bit of exposition, you’ll get to play the event, requiring you to close a set of portals. Doing so will teleport you to a series of new areas and after you’ve closed the final one, you’ll kick off the events of season 6. It’s a relatively short experience, but it’s neat since it’s more narrative-driven than the main PvP section of the game. Plus, it’s pretty cool that you can play it solo.
Keep in mind that if you skip the Zero Crisis Finale, or if you just want to play it again, you can do so from the main menu. Simply press Square on PlayStation, X on Xbox, or Y on Nintendo Switch to change the match type, then navigate to the Zero Crisis Finale option and select it. Finally, press Triangle on PlayStation, Y on Xbox, or X on Nintendo Switch to start the event.
Primal additions
The main theme of Fortnite season 6 is Primal, giving you a prehistoric take on the beloved battle royal with the start of the new update. This means you’ll find a combination of primal imagery and modern technology, akin to what you’d see in Horizon Zero Dawn — a mixture of old and new. This new theme comes with lots of features ,such as wild prehistoric animals that roam the map, new makeshift weapons, and aesthetic changes to the map.
Speaking of wild animals, be sure to eliminate the ones you come across, as they drop a new resource called Animal Bones that are used for crafting (which we’ll cover more below). Aside from that, some animals are hostile, so you’ll want to take them out anyway. Other new additions are the Rare Bunker Chests, which are scattered around the map, though they’re extremely well hidden. These Chests contain better, rarer loot, and we highly recommend finding them. You’ll also find a slew of new Primal weapons, but we’ll dive deeper into that below.
Finally, be on the lookout for NPCs at each of the main hubs. They’ll still take your gold bars as currency, much like what was introduced during season 5. You’ll want to talk with them and purchase various things like quests or even Prop Disguises.
Finally, be aware of the new Spire Guardians, who can be defeated for some fairly decent loot. These enemies are located around the map and are quite challenging to take down but well worth the effort.
Map alterations
Some of the most noticeable season 6 changes are to the map’s terrain. The most prominent change is of course The Spire, a huge tower at the center of the map. But if you look at the map closely, you’ll notice several branching paths that stem from the center in sort of a star formation, indicating the new terrain. If you visit the brown/orange locations, you’ll find new additions to the map, so be sure to take the time to explore.

- The Spire
- Boney Burbs
- Colossal Crops
However, you’ll also find new additions to Weeping Woods, Pleasant Park, and the area west of Lazy Lake. There are lots of new touches, like handmade huts and village decorations, as well as a new color palette. Despite these new changes, much of the map remains the same as last season, so stick to the new brown and yellow areas if you want to see something new.
Crafting and new weapons
We cover this in more detail in our crafting guide here, but the main thing you need to know is that you can craft weapon upgrades on the fly with season 6. This means you’ll have more opportunities to take out the competition, but it also means your enemies can do the same. This new system rewards you for exploring and allows you to experiment with various weapon types, from Primal to mechanical.
The point is that you’ll absolutely want to always have upgrading on your mind since you can do it so easily now. It’s a good idea to take a look at what you have and make a mental note of the materials you need to upgrade, that way, you’ll have the upper hand against your enemies. All in all, this is a neat new feature that spices up the combat.
One of the main new weapons is the Bow, which packs a serious punch but is very slow to utilize. It will take some getting used to, but once you master it, you can take out your enemies efficiently since it deals high damage. Also, make sure you experiment with different Bow upgrades to figure out what works best for you. There are several different kinds, from an Explosive Bow to one that emits shockwaves.
A new battle pass
One of the stars of season 6 is the new Battle Pass, which — as always — features 100 tiers of goodies for you to unlock. It’s available for 950 V-bucks, which can be acquired with real cash (around $10) or by simply playing the game. The cool thing is that if you buy the Battle Pass and complete all 100 tiers, you’ll gain a total of 1,500 V-bucks back, so it pays for itself, sort of.
The Fortnite season 6 Battle Pass is full of a ton of unlockable cosmetics, including a Lara Croft skin from the Tomb Raider series. Not only that, but there are a few different variations of Lara, as well as some Tomb Raider-related gear, so be sure to check them out. There are also lots of other Primal-looking characters throughout the Battle Pass, along with a fancy new chicken named Cluck.
The other main character most will want is Raven from DC Comics. There are two variants available: One unlocked at Battle Pass level 77, and the other at level 85, with plenty of Raven cosmetics in between. The final cosmetic you’ll gain access to is for reaching Battle Pass level 100. This grants you access to the Spire Assassin, a formidable-looking warrior. And, aside from leveling up the Battle Pass, there are also separate rewards you can unlock, some of which pertain to Neymar Jr., a famous Brazilian soccer player who will be added to Fortnite later in the season.
