Director of 'FFVII Remake' and 'Kingdom Hearts III' says both are progressing

In a new interview with Weekly Famitsu, translated into English by Gematsu, Tetsuya Nomura discussed the development of both Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII Remake.

On the subject of Kingdom Hearts III, Nomura said, “While I can’t make a sweeping statement because the development process is different from what we’ve done so far, there are still worlds untouched. Production is progressing on unannounced worlds, in a state that we cannot show them off. In terms of the state of development, there is still some way to go.”

At this point, it’s not really surprising that Kingdom Hearts III is far from completion. In 2010, Nomura hinted at its existence in the Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Ultimania, an entry in the Kingdom Hearts informational book series. Sony officially announced Kingdom Hearts III at E3 2013. As each year passes, fans continue to wonder when they will receive the next mainline iteration of the Disney/Square Enix crossover, the first since 2006’s Kingdom Hearts II.

As for Final Fantasy VII Remake, Nomura was more vague. “We’re steadily progressing on production,” he said, before apologizing for the status of both titles. Final Fantasy VII Remake was revealed at E3 2015, after years of fans clamoring for an updated version of the iconic RPG. We have since learned that it will be a “Multi-Part Series.”

While it certainly sounds like these games won’t be available for quite awhile, the one spot of bright news is that Square Enix hopes to show both titles at events throughout the year.

Nomura may be the bearer of bad news, but it’s hard to be mad at him. He is currently undertaking the gargantuan role of leading two of Square Enix’s biggest projects. He has been the director of the Kingdom Hearts franchise since the beginning and has created characters for the Final Fantasy franchise since Final Fantasy V. Nomura was also the original director on Final Fantasy XV before switching over to direct Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Kingdom Hearts fans still have the disastrously titled, but hopefully good, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue to look forward to on January 24. Also, anyone who has not played the franchise can join those waiting for Kingdom Hearts III by picking up Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix on March 28.

Controversial Switch Kingdom Hearts cloud port gets big fix
kingdom hearts cloud versions updated with server congestion status performance and graphics mode 3 version update

Square Enix Japan has announced that the cloud version of the Kingdom Hearts series for Nintendo Switch has received an update that allows users to check server congestion status and switch between performance and graphics modes as part of Version 1.0.3.

The server congestion status is the most important patch of all, appearing across all three collections -- Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III + ReMind. Square Enix releasing the Kingdom Hearts series on the Switch as a cloud version (or the Kingdom Hearts Masterpiece Integrum collection, as it's officially called) caused controversy among fans in October 2021, as they reported getting kicked out of the server mid-game along with lag -- both issues that are commonplace with internet cloud streaming. Starting today, they can see how busy the servers are in order to determine when the best time to play is in order to get the best gameplay experience.

6 Disney worlds we need to see in Kingdom Hearts 4
Moana and Maui riding a boat.

The trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4 introduced fans to the world of Quadratum, which bears a striking resemblance to the real world ( hence Sora's realistic-looking, Final Fantasy-esque makeover). Strelitzia, the girl who resides there and in the Tokyo apartment Sora wakes up in, tells Sora that Quadratum is like an afterworld for people like them, but it's full of life for everyone else. As series creator Tetsuya Nomura pointed out in a recent interview with Famitsu, it's a different reality than the one Sora came from, therefore he won't stay there forever, nor will he keep his new look once he leaves and gets back to his universe.

That being said, there will be plenty of other worlds for Sora and company (once Donald and Goofy find him, of course) to travel to where he'll maintain his original look -- spiky hair, clown shoes and all (or whatever outfit he wears in accordance to the motif of the world he finds himself in). Nomura did confirm that multiple worlds are in development but did not reveal what they are.

4 big Kingdom Hearts 4 details emerge in new interview
Sora lying down on a couch in Kingdom Hearts 4.

In Kingdom Hearts 4, our Keyblade hero Sora has a brand new look that finally makes him resemble a realistic-looking Final Fantasy character and a swanky new apartment to go with it. It's an impressive feat for a 15-year-old, assuming he didn't time skip a few years after leaving Donald Duck, Goofy, and all of his friends at the end of Kingdom Hearts 3. According to series creator Tetsuya Nomura, however, Sora's new makeover and pad may not last as long as we thought it would.

In a recent interview with Famitsu (with translation courtesy of VGC), Nomura divulged some new details about Kingdom Hearts 4, which he suddenly announced at the Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary event in Tokyo last Sunday -- and on Palm Sunday, no less. He shares the new world that Sora will be roaming around in for most of the game and demystified any misconceptions fans may have about the world of Quadratum. Here are some important revelations from the interview.
