Fire Emblem series will get four new Nintendo games by 2018

Fire Emblem Direct 2.18.2017
Nintendo revealed on January 12 that a spinoff of the Fire Emblem series called Fire Emblem Warriors would be released for the upcoming Switch console. Less than a week later, the company has announced additional information at a special Nintendo Direct event — not one, not two, but three other Fire Emblem games are on the way, and they’ll all be available by 2018.

The 3DS is evidently not being forgotten once the Switch comes along. On May 19, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia will be released across the line of portable systems, along with Amiibo figures of the two protagonists, Alm and Celica.

This game is an updated version of the Japan-only Famicom game Fire Emblem Gaiden, which featured essentially the same story, same characters, and an increased emphasis on exploration. Certain towns and dungeons will also let you explore from a traditional third-person perspective, and combat looks to be relatively unchanged from the more recent Fire Emblem games.

Character progression was described at the Nintendo Direct event as “flexible,” and will likely include branching paths. Like the contemporary games, it will also feature rendered cutscenes and voice acting.

The Nintendo Direct event on Wednesday, January 18, also gave us our first look at Fire Emblem Warriors gameplay, which appears to be very similar to Koei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors games, as well as Hyrule Warriors. Chrom from Awakening will be making an appearance — the gameplay footage showed him charge into an enormous crowd of enemies and easily cut them down to size. Fire Emblem Warriors is out this fall for not only Switch, but also the New 3DS family of systems. The original 3DS will not be supported, presumably as a result of the technical issues surrounding Hyrule Warriors Legends.

More excited about a new “traditional” Switch Fire Emblem game? You’ll have to wait a little bit longer. The game won’t be arriving until 2018, and is currently just known as Fire Emblem for Nintendo Switch. Expect more information on this title in the future.

Lastly, there’s a Fire Emblem game you’ll be able to get your hands on in February. Fire Emblem Heroes, which launches first on Google Play before making its way to iOS devices, is a free-to-play Fire Emblem game featuring its own original story that focuses on two kingdoms — one torn by cruelty and the other by privilege — engaged in a massive conflict. As the “Summoner,” you must call on a selection of previous Fire Emblem characters to help you win the war, but others will take up arms against you. To acquire these characters, you must spend orbs, which can be earned both through regular play and microtransactions.

The game’s art style has also been somewhat “mobilized,” with large heads on the sprites and simpler animation, but the game is otherwise a relatively simple translation of the turn-based strategy gameplay the series is known for.

What games will Nintendo Switch 2 launch with? We have some ideas
Mario and friends zip through a race course in Mario Kart 8.

We’re officially on “new console watch.” Reports from credible publications like Eurogamer say that Nintendo secretly showed developers its next system behind closed doors at this year’s Gamescom. While it’s only a rumor, it’s a realistic one. We’re six years into the Nintendo Switch’s lifespan and even the longest-running consoles turn over at eight. If Nintendo’s next system is one or two years away, it’s time to start lining up support from third-party developers.

We’ve speculated on features we’d want in a new system before, but the reality of a new platform has me asking another question: What games would you launch with something like this? The Nintendo Switch’s launch day was crucial to its long-term success thanks to a bonafide classic in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While the rest of its launch lineup wasn’t as impressive, Nintendo capitalized fairly quickly with titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2. If Nintendo’s going to push Switch owners over to a new system, it’ll have to roll out the big guns.

Nintendo Switch’s weirdest launch game is getting a surprise sequel
Key art for Everybody 1-2-Switch!

Nintendo has quietly announced Everybody 1-2-Switch!, a sequel to one of the oddest launch titles for Nintendo Switch.
1-2-Switch! was a Nintendo Switch launch title that served as a tech demo of sorts for the Joy-Con controllers, with players completing minigames based on direction from actors in live-action clips. It's a very quirky and critically divisive Nintendo Switch game, so it's a bit surprising to see a follow-up. According to the eShop listing for Everybody 1-2-Switch!, this game lets players use their Joy-Cons or smartphones to complete a variety of team-based minigames. And that's about all we've seen or know about this $30 game ahead of its June 30 launch alongside some new pastel Joy-Cons.

Everybody 1-2-Switch!'s announcement was quite unorthodox for Nintendo. It simply tweeted about the game's existence and opened up preorders on the eShop. This all happened with no reveal trailer less than a month before the game's launch. It's unknown why Nintendo's taking this approach instead of including the game in a Nintendo Direct or other major showcase, but a 2022 report from Fanbyte may reveal the answer. According to that report, Everybody 1-2-Switch! tested horribly, and Nintendo worried that the game could "damage the company’s reputation as a great software developer."
Almost a year after that report, it seems that the game has improved enough to release, or maybe Nintendo is just willing to take the hit after the impressive launch and critical reception of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Either way, this is a weird sequel to a weird Nintendo Switch launch game that's being mutedly marketed so it doesn't elicit much hype. We'll just have to wait and play it for ourselves if we want to know whether Everybody 1-2-Switch! is an enjoyable game or not.
Everybody 1-2-Switch! will be released physically and digitally for Nintendo Switch on June 30.

As the 3DS eShop closes, devs reflect on a golden age of Nintendo indies
Best Nintendo 3DS games

The 3DS eShop is no longer allowing Nintendo fans to make new game purchases, marking the end of a long era of DS-branded handhelds. Not only that, but it's also sunsetting a vibrant indie community in the process. After helping smaller developers break through with WiiWare and DSiWare, the 3DS eShop was where indies really started to flourish on Nintendo consoles. Multiple games and developers built success stories on the platform, starting series that are still recognized in the eyes of Nintendo fans and stand as some of the 3DS’ most iconic games.

Within a year of the eShop's launch, WayForward's Mighty Switch Force provided one of the system's best 3D experiences, Renegade Kid's Mutant Mudd showed the potential of a platformer where players can hop between the foreground and background, and Hörberg Productions' Gunman Clive provided a short, sweet, and cheap throwback platformer experience with lots of styles. By 2014, Yacht Club Games' Shovel Knight had cemented itself as one of the best indie games of all time on the 3DS. Titles like that gave the 3DS a reputation as a haven for smaller developers. a platform where they could break out of a niche and connect with a larger audience.
