Nintendo’s free-to-play mobile game Fire Emblem: Heroes has been updated with a new selection of playable heroes, along with an additional storyline chapter that runs parallel to the game’s core campaign.

Nintendo also promises an array of future fixes and balance tweaks in response to player feedback, indicating that the app has a long life span ahead of it.

Released for iOS and Android platforms earlier this month, Fire Emblem: Heroes is a turn-based, tactical role-playing game in which players guide custom-built squadrons of Fire Emblem characters in battle. While the game is available as a free download, playable characters must be summoned using in-game currency, and many of the game’s best units are only available as rare drops.

This week’s Fire Emblem: Heroes update adds a new Paralogue chapter featuring three playable maps. The game’s storyline content was previously limited to a nine-chapter campaign, and additional Paralogue chapters will roll out on a regular basis in the months ahead.

Players can also summon several new characters as part of the recently launched “New Heroes: Family Bonds” promotional event. Featured five-star characters appearing in New Heroes: Family Bonds include Restoration Lady Lirika, Heir of Light Seliph, Restoration Lord Ephraim, and Julia of Naga’s Blood. Each of these new characters has a 3 percent chance of appearing during randomly distributed player summonses.

Nintendo also outlined its future plans for Fire Emblem: Heroes in an update sent to players Wednesday. Nintendo revealed that it has scrapped plans to make certain gameplay elements more difficult in the weeks after Fire Emblem: Heroes‘ launch, announcing that Training Tower stamina costs will remain halved indefinitely, and players will suffer no penalty for equipping skills.

New Training Tower rewards will also be refreshed on a weekly basis, and the game’s App-Release Bonus Period has been extended, giving newcomers more time to build up their armies. Following a planned March update, players will also be able to earn experience from defeating enemies who are lower in level than friendly units, marking a change in long-standing series tradition.

Fire Emblem: Heroes players will continue to earn bonus summoning orbs and stamina restoration items as the game’s App-Release Bonus Period continues through March 14.

Fire Emblem Engage makes the wait for a Nintendo Switch 2 more tolerable
Alear and Marth open a door in Fire Emblem Engage.

If you had asked me whether or not I was ready for an upgraded Nintendo Switch two months ago, my answer would have been an emphatic yes. I had just played Pokémon Scarlet and, like many people, was baffled by its poor technical performance. I began to wonder if Nintendo’s aging hardware had finally hit its limits, unable to meet developers’ growing ambitions. Perhaps it wasn’t just time for a Switch Pro, but a new console altogether.

That desire was a reactionary one. Two months after that Pokémon game's ugly launch, I find myself stunned by the Switch’s latest exclusive, Fire Emblem Engage. The tactical RPG is one of the console’s best-looking games to date. It’s a major step up from 2018’s Fire Emblem: Three Houses, with brighter colors that pop on my Switch OLED screen and silky smooth performance that makes it feel like a playable anime.

Fire Emblem Engage takes the right cues from Nintendo’s mobile games
Alear clenches his fist while wearing a ring in Fire Emblem Engage.

Given how long the video game development process takes, sometimes we don’t see the full impact of a game’s innovation until years later. That’s something I immediately noticed when booting up Fire Emblem Engage, the latest installment of Nintendo’s long-running tactics series. After a few hours with it, I could see how the project was likely conceived as a direct reaction to 2017’s Fire Emblem Heroes, one of Nintendo’s biggest mobile hits. Though 2018’s Fire Emblem: Three Houses was a major critical success for the series, Heroes seems to be the title that’s shaping Fire Emblem’s future five years later.

Marvel Snap’s Winterverse event introduces new cards, variants, and more
Marvel Snap art highlights Winterverse variants for Rogue, Ebony Maw, Patriot, and Rockslide.

The latest Marvel Snap update kicks off the Winterverse event, bringing many holiday-themed variants and brand-new cards to the mobile card game.
The two new cards coming to Marvel Snap this week are Darkhawk and Sentry. Darkhawk is a superhero who first emerged in the 1990s and has a techno-organic body with glider wings. In Marvel Snap, he's a 4-Cost, 1-Power Ongoing card that gives +2 Power for each card in the deck of your opponent.
Meanwhile, Sentry is a hero that was introduced in 2000 that has Superman-like abilities, but is connected to an evil entity called the Void that's just as powerful. In-game, that translates to Sentry being a 4-Cost On Reveal card with 8-Power that can't be played at the right location, as playing Sentry will cast a -8 power Void card there.

We don't know if Sentry and Darkhawk are Series 3, Series 4, or Series 5 cards yet. It will take some time for Marvel Snap's meta to evolve and really prove whether or not Darkhawk and Sentry are all that useful, but they do both have interesting abilities. Regardless, keep an eye out for them in Collector's Reserves and in the Token Shop.
They're not the only part of the Winterverse event, though. From December 20 until January 2, Second Dinner is giving away in-game awards for logging in each day. These range from 100 credits to a special Nick Fury card variant featuring Samuel L. Jackson's signature. Five new winter-themed card variants will also start to show up in the shop and Collector's Reserves. You can now find Winterverse cards for Abomination, Ebony Maw, Patriot, Rockslide, and Rogue.
A Winterverse bundle that includes a Sunspot Winterverse Variant, Avatar, 2000 Collector's Tokens, 8000 credits, 100 Sunspot Boosters, and a "Tacos After This?" title will be added to the shop in the coming days as well.
Marvel Snap is available now for iOS, Android, and PC, and it even made Digital Trends' best games of 2022 list.
