Hands-on: ‘Flinthook’

'Flinthook' proves that a small indie darling can win E3

Flinthook, a little indie “rogue-lite” from Montreal-based developer Tribute made some waves at PAX East in March, with a flashy gameplay demo showing off its distinctive art style and grappling-hook-centric gameplay. The game, which came to E3 as part of Microsoft’s cadre of Xbox One indie games, was the smallest game I played at the show. It was also arguably the best.

At first glance, Flinthook is a bit of an indie game cliché. Players control a masked space-pirate, who boards spaceships to raid for treasure. Players move from room to room, using a grappling hook to navigate rooms full of enemies and traps. It’s cute, cherubic pixel-art aesthetic is, like so many others, reminiscent of an earlier time. Its “rogue-lite” progression — you restart the game from square one every time you die, but can acquire certain gear and perks that carry over from run to run — has become popular among small and midrange developers like Tribute, which has only eight people on staff.

E3 2016: Ever Oasis is the new action-RPG from Final Fantasy director Koichi Ishii

That’s all just scenery, though. The core gameplay mechanic of Flinthook is a grappling hook that players aim with the right stick, allowing them to shoot across a room in rapid, unpredictable ways. With grappling rungs spread liberally throughout each room, there’s an art to planning out your shots on the fly, so the pirate is always moving. In many rooms, he never has to touch the ground.

Combine that with a gun that’s aimed using the same stick as the grappling hooks, and a time-slowing mechanic used to get through certain puzzles, and there’s always two or three things you should be doing. A great Flinthook player, I imagine — I was pretty so-so — can balance on-the-fly planning and very fast multitasking. Even if all those thoughts get scrambled, there’s still an exhilarating speed to it.

Grappling hooks were a bit of a trend at E3 2016. In VR games, they’re a great excuse for moving players around a space without animating movement. In blockbuster shooters like Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Titanfall 2, they can break up the monotony of mechanical sweep-and-clear tactics that style of game encourages. Of all of them, Flinthook felt the most natural: The grappling hook is not the solution to a problem, or a way to mix things up. It’s just fun to use. Clearing a room without getting touched or touching the ground makes you feel smart and powerful.

Though an official release date has not been set, Tribute told Digital Trends its targeting an “early 2017” release date, and expects to launch the game on Steam, Xbox One, and PS4.

The future of E3 is in question again as ESA reportedly seeks a 2025 reinvention

The future of the once popular video game industry expo E3 is once again in question as the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) ended its partnership with ReedPop, the company that was helping it revitalize the event.

ReedPop is the company that runs events like PAX, EGX, and C2E2, and the ESA had brought them on board to help reimagine the in-person experience at E3. This was supposed to start with E3 2023, but it ended up being canceled a couple of months before it was supposed to take place. Clearly, the ReedPop and ESA partnership wasn't working well, so both companies have decided to move on. ESA CEO and president Stanley Pierre-Louis provided the following statement on the matter to GamesIndustry.biz.
"We appreciate ReedPop’s partnership over the past 14 months and support their ongoing efforts to bring industry and fans together through their various events. While the reach of E3 remains unmatched in our industry, we are continuing to explore how we can evolve it to best serve the video game industry and are evaluating every aspect of the event, from format to location. We are committed to our role as a convenor for the industry and look forward to sharing news about E3 in the coming months."
This seems to confirm a claim from the Los Angeles City Tourism Commission from earlier in the year that plans for E3 2024 and E3 2025 at the Los Angeles Convention Center had been canceled. That said, Pierre-Louis' statement and the GamesIndustry.biz report indicate that E3 2024 and E3 2025 aren't canceled outright.
GamesIndustry.biz notes that it's still possible for the event to take place in 2024 -- just not at the Los Angeles Convention Center -- and claims that the ESA is "working on a complete reinvention of the E3 show for 2025." We'll just have to wait and see if those plans actually come to fruition, though, as E3 has struggled to return to its former glory since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Is Baldur’s Gate 3 coming to Xbox?
A mage holding a flaming object.

After years in early access only on PC, Baldur's Gate 3 is finally here in its final state. This CRPG has the internet buzzing about just how long and varied the experience can be. What's even better is that it can be played in co-op, though with limited cross-platform features. Those looking at the game may notice that there is only ever mention of a PC and PlayStation 5 version, which obviously raises the question about Xbox consoles. Baldur's Gate 3 doesn't have any exclusivity deal with PlayStation, so why isn't it on Xbox, and will it ever be?

The latest update from Larian states that it will be able to release Baldur's Gate 3 on Series X and S sometime before the end of 2023, but with the S version not having split-screen coop.

Larian Studios promises to release Baldur's Gate 3 on Xbox Series X/S later this year after pushing the game back because of performance problems on Xbox Series S.
Baldur's Gate 3 is available now on PC and will come out for PS5 on September 6, but an Xbox Series X/S version won't be available for a little bit longer. In a July 2023 community update, developer Larian Studios explained that this is because it needed "to ensure that the game is performing without compromise across the entire Xbox X/S ecosystem, in multiplayer and with split-screen. The Xbox Series X version was running fine, but the Xbox Series S version of the game was struggling a lot more. The Xbox versions of Baldur's Gate 3 didn't have a release window until now, when Larian Studios co-founder Swen Vincke took to X to confirm it'd come to Xbox platforms before the end of the year. That said, it will exclude one notable feature.
"Super happy to confirm that after meeting [Phil Spencer] yesterday, we’ve found a solution that allows us to bring Baldur’s Gate 3 to Xbox players this year still, something we’ve been working towards for quite some time," Vincke wrote. "All improvements will be there, with split-screen coop on Series X. Series S will not feature split-screen co-op, but will also include cross-save progression between Steam and Xbox Series."
Thankfully, it looks like Xbox players won't have to wait too much longer to play this excellent game, but it will be one of the first games to notably drop a major feature between the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S versions. This follows comments by Head of Xbox Phil Spencer where he said he doesn't believe Microsoft will drop support for Xbox Series S in the foreseeable future. "I want to make sure games are available on both, that's our job as a platform holder and we're committed to that with our partners," Spencer told Eurogamer. "And I think we're gonna get there with Larian. So I'm not overly worried about that, but we've learned some stuff through it. Having an entry-level price point for console, sub-$300, is a good thing for the industry."
