New map, boat battles, fishing, swimming! Fortnite: Chapter 2 is finally here

Nearly 48 hours ago, the original map used in Fortnite was destroyed, the game left unplayable. Since then, Epic Games has remained suspiciously silent surrounding what happens next. Fortunately, the wait is finally over, and the popular battle royale title has been rebooted, taking on the official name of Fortnite Chapter 2.

As you can probably guess, Fortnite Chapter 2 introduces a ton of new content into the free-to-play title; most importantly, it adds a brand-new map for players to duke it out as they fight for the title of sole survivor. Based on the original reveal trailer, the new island is exceptionally lush and spacious, with plenty of forests, mountains, and lakes as far as the eye can see. Of course, one of the few constants in Fortnite is change, so we are expecting future seasons to change the island’s appearance. The video also shows the notable return of the flying battle bus that carries players into the fight.

As previously speculated, Chapter 2 also delivers new ways to play the game with the debut of a few new activities such as fishing and swimming. Or, if you are into hiding during the match, the latest update now allows you to duck in dumpsters of haystacks. Modern vehicles have also been introduced, such as boats and pogo sticks (I wish I were kidding about that last part).

There are also new multiplayer emotes that allow you to collaborate with your friends to pull off slick new moves in the battle zone. As far as new weapons go, the update introduces a common variant of the rocket launcher and a semi-automatic pistol, to name a couple.

Like previous seasons, a new battle pass is up for purchase for 950 V-Bucks. Players who purchase the battle pass can earn bonuses such as new character skins, including this new blue blobby character (above). While it remains similar to previous battle passes, Fortnite Chapter 2 – Season 1’s battle pass makes tweaks to progression. It allows you to earn an additional 1,500 V-Bucks from completing tasks, as well as more leisurely ways to gain experience by allowing you to do various tasks, including killing opponents or opening chests.

You can still get a Thunder Shotgun in Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 2. Here’s how
Fortnite characters in a city.

Fortnite has received plenty of exciting new weapons in Chapter 4 Season 2, and in typical fashion, Epic has also vaulted some of last season's weapons to clean up the loot pool. Among the weapons vaulted for Season 2 is the Thunder Shotgun -- but weirdly, it can still be obtained, as it appears Epic possibly overlooked one NPC who drops it.

Anyone who wants to score the Thunder Shotgun in Season 2 can head over to Frenzy Fields and look for the NPC named Sunflower who walks around the farm. Simply eliminate her and pick up the weapon she drops. It's unclear if this is actually something Epic missed, or if the team just simply didn't want to bother changing up Sunflower's loot drops. Either way, it's currently the only way to obtain the Thunder Shotgun.

Fortnite Chapter 4 is plagued with bugs, and it’s spoiling my hammer time
Fortnite character holding the Shockwave Hammer.

The latest Fortnite update is undoubtedly one of the best ever to hit the game. Not only is there an all-new map with a fresh aesthetic and design choices, but a new perk upgrade mechanic is taking the game in a brilliant direction. Almost every weapon being viable is the cherry on top. But there's one big issue plaguing my play experience: a slew of bugs and glitches.

More than in past updates, I've run into near match-losing, game-breaking issues in the updated battle royale, and it's been a deal breaker when it comes to spending as much time playing as I usually do. One of the worst parts is that it seems quite a few of these problems are attached to one of my new favorite weapons and movement tools, the Shockwave Hammer.

I love Fortnite again thanks to its new chapter’s best change
The Mandalorian with Fortnite's new crystal gun

I find myself taken aback when comparing Fortnite's original 2017 release to what it became in 2022. It's wild to think that substantial, game-altering updates are coming to Fortnite all these years later. As if Zero Build mode wasn't enough change for one year, its most recent changes have completely altered the game in a positive way yet again.
