Fortnite is down with players being told they don’t ‘have permission to play’

As kids and adults alike enjoy their holiday breaks, one thing they won’t be doing, for now, is playing Fortnite. The massively popular battle royale title has gone offline.

While Epic games has previously closed the game’s servers to update it, like with its recent Chapter 3 update, the sudden issues preventing players from logging in are not part of the developer’s plan.

Fortnite is currently unavailable and players are unable to log-in while we investigate an issue.

According to a post on Twitter, Epic games began investigating issues with players not being able to log into Fortnite or get into a match around 8 a.m. PT. However, just an hour ago the official Fortnite Status account followed up, saying that the game “is currently unavailable and players are unable to log-in while we investigate an issue.” It seems that for now, the game is totally offline, with any other details on why the game is down being kept internal.

However, not all users are having the same experience when they try to log in to Fortnite. Some are getting a strange screen that tells them, much like a mom who catches a kid playing a game at 1 a.m., that they “do not have permission to play Fortnite.” It’s not clear when players will once again have permission to play the game and be able to freely log in.

Fortnite‘s downtime comes during one of the first moments that just about anyone can play the game’s latest update, Fortnite Chapter 3. The update radically changed the game when it arrived earlier this December, changing the game’s map and adding new gameplay mechanics, like the ability to aim down sights or swing around like Spider-Man.

Every new season in Fortnite is a massive event. While not quite on the scale of a new Chapter, seasons still bring about a ton of changes to the ever-evolving battle royale phenomenon to keep players engaged. New skins, abilities, missions, weapons, and a new battle pass to complete are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of new content. Let's dive into when you can expect the next season of Fortnite to begin.When does the next Fortnite season start?We are currently in Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 2, meaning the next season will be Chapter 5 Season 3. The season will roll over at 2 a.m PT on May 24, 2024. Keep in mind that there is always a period of downtime between seasons as Epic updates the game and gets it ready for whatever new content and themes will be included. So while that 2 a.m. time should be accurate for when the season will end, we can't be 100% certain about when the servers will be back up and you can actually start playing season 3. We have no official word on what the next Fortnite season's theme will be, nor have there been any credible leaks. If we hear anything on what to expect on May 24, we will keep you in the loop.

The last thing you want to see when loading up Fortnite for a match with your friends, especially when a big new update is dropping, is to be hit with an error. The worst of which might be the "Fortnite servers not responding" error due to how vague it is. Most people don't know what servers are, let alone what it means when they aren't responding, except that you can't play your game. The question then becomes if you have any power to solve this issue yourself or if you're forced to wait until Epic Games addresses it on its end.
Can you fix the servers not responding error in Fortnite?

The first thing to do when encountering this error in Fortnite is to go straight to the Epic Games Help website or X account (formerly Twitter). This will let you know if it is something on Epic Games' end that is the issue and also keep you updated on the status of when the servers are expected to be fixed. Servers can also be taken down for maintenance or in preparation for major updates, which will also be accounted for here. If this is the case, there's nothing to do but wait until they announce the servers are back up and running.
