‘Fortnite’ adds zombies to battle royale just in time for Halloween

Fortnite - Fortnitemares 2018

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 includes zombies in its Blackout battle royale mode, and it will soon be getting some company in that department. The Fortnitemares 2018 update for Fortnite adds some terrifying creatures to battle royale, and you’ll have to fight them while also facing off against other players.

More Fortnite coverage

In a brief trailer for Fortnitemares, a group of eager battle royale fighters are flying in the Battle Bus before they see a purple floating island explode in a flash of bright light. After the rubble has settled, lanky creatures with jack-o-lantern-like faces come rushing out of the fog, ready to attack.

These monsters are called “Cube Monsters,” giving us a little more insight into the mysterious purple cubes that have been floating around and leaving ruins on the ground. Alongside the “Cube Fiends” are “Cube Fragments,” and defeating them will earn your character loot.

No, the Cube Monsters aren’t technically zombies, but that’s true in the same way that The Last of Us and Days Gone don’t have zombies — if it’s in a horde and it wants to kill you, it’s effectively a zombie, and we can’t wait to blow them away with every weapon at our disposal. Speaking of which …

New western and horror-inspired weapons have been added, as well. The classic Six Shooter lets you take out your targets like you’re a hero in a John Ford movie, while the Fiend Hunter Crowbow is perfect for anyone looking to dress up as Van Helsing this year. The Deadfire outfit has been added with the weapons, giving your character an outlaw look, and it will get progressively spookier as you survive in matches and kill both human and A.I. enemies.

A new set of free challenges is included with Fortnitemares, and the reward for completing all of them is a creepy Dark Engine glider. The initial challenges require you to destroy Cube Monsters, visit Corrupted Areas, deal damage to Cube Monsters with assault rifles or pistols, and dance at gargoyles. We assume you’ll want to do the Monster Mash, but Epic Games didn’t specify which dance moves you’ll actually need to use.

Fortnite is available with cross-play support on Xbox One, PS4, Switch, PC, iOS, and Android.

For horror fans, Fortnite is secretly gaming’s best haunted house
Fortnite Jonesy running from a ghost bride in a dimly lit hallway.

I never thought the day would come where I'd call Fortnite one of the greatest horror games of all time, but here we are.

If you find yourself questioning that revelation, I completely get it. “Is he talking about the tension of Battle Royale mode? Or maybe the zombies in the Save the World playlist?” No. I straight-up mean there is a fantastic horror game inside Fortnite. There are hundreds of them, in fact, and they're all completely free. These experiences, made entirely by fans in the game's creative mode, feel completely separate from the game they're based in. When taking an even closer look, I found that an entire community of developers have been saturating the Fortnite horror genre with quality titles for audiences of all ages.

Call of Duty: Warzone devs share the design secrets of the best battle royale map
Overhead shot of Vondel map in Warzone.

The Vondel map in Call of Duty: Warzone is one of the best battlegrounds in the history of the battle royale genre. It's a small-scale, densely packed map with a wide variety of points of interest (POIs) that feel distinct. Modeled after European cities, Vondel is a feat of level design as it simultaneously feels fun and functional. It's a city that you can truly imagine as a real place, with a slew of different shops to enter, a canal, and even a water taxi service that moves throughout the map.

But behind the scenes, there are countless design choices that help the flow and pacing of the map. To get a better sense of just what makes this map work so well, I spoke with Beenox Senior Level Designer Fred Wilson and Lead Artist Guillaume Alain. The duo revealed how Vondel's composition seeps into the players' subconscious, with intuitive design choices that work better than any Warzone map that's come before.

Fortnite Reality Augments: full list and how to use them
Fortnite Zero Builds key art.

Every new chapter of Fortnite is a massive event. While seasonal changes bring plenty of minor tweaks and additions, it's almost always when a new chapter rolls around that major overhauls or new mechanics are introduced. Fortnite Chapter 4 was no exception, and aside from the extreme changes the island underwent, it brought one very important change to gameplay that makes a huge difference when going for that elusive victory royal (it isn't easy to win Fortnite, after all).

Augments, well, augment the game. There are a few challenges that somewhat introduce what these are, but they leave out almost all the important details for you to find out on your own. Augments need to be considered, and deeply understood, not only for when you get them yourself but to know what new tricks your opponents could have up their sleeves. Before you get taken by surprise, here's a complete breakdown of how to unlock augments and how they work in Fortnite.
What are augments in Fortnite?
Augments, or Reality Augments, are a new perk system introduced into Fortnite. There are currently 20 augments in the game, but there are 32 total that cycle in and out with each Season. You can get access to multiple augments during a single match, but augments do not carry over after a match is finished, whether you win or lose. These perks can range from modifying certain weapon types to granting buffs for performing actions, and much more. There are no bad augments, so you will want to get as many as possible. Augments also have their own tab in your menu where you can see which ones you've had so far to track your progress using them all.
