If you think you’re the best at ‘Forza Motorsport 6,’ here is your chance to prove it

Forza Motorsport 6 Forza Racing Championship Kick off
Brian Ekberg, Community Manager at Turn 10 Studios, announced on Thursday that Forza Motorsport 6 gamers can now sign up to participate in the Forza Racing Championship (ForzaFC) kicking off on August 8. While players will compete for cool Forza and Xbox prizes, the biggest reward will be a shiny new 2017 Ford Focus RS that players can drive in the real world! That car has a starting MSRP of just over $36,000.

“Whether you’re racing royalty or just getting started, we’ve got a place for you in ForzaRC,” Ekberg writes. “We designed the competition to be a place where players of all skill levels can participate and have a great time competing for awesome prizes.”

All players participating in the first season will have access to the Elite Series and Open Series. Each series will not only offer different prizes, enticing players to participate in both, but will have different tracks and different game modes. For example, Season One Elite Cup #1 features “one on one” and “best of three” modes. This particular cup begins on Saturday, August 13.

According to the Season One Elite Cup #1 rules, players wanting to participate in the championship will need to register an account on the ESL Gaming website. And although the registration process is completed only once, players must sign up each week by Friday at a specific time to be eligible for the following week’s completion.

Additionally, the rules also state that the ForzaRC Elite Series Rivals Qualifier always starts on Monday (8am PDT) and ends on Thursday (11:59pm PDT). A new ForzaRC Elite Series Rivals Qualifier opens on August 8, August 15, and August 22. To be eligible, a valid replay is required for every posted time.

Guy Welch, Marketing Director of the Forza franchise, revealed the new championship back in June. To celebrate, Microsoft released the 2016 Ford #66 Ford Racing GT Le Mans race car for Forza Motorsport 6 as a free download. The code for the car was distributed through the Xbox Live messaging service to all players of Forza Motorsport 6. The company also launched a new Le Mans-themed Rivals event within the game.

“There are currently three million players racing in Forza games every month, competing in events such as June’s Le Mans-timed Michelin 24 Hour Forza Challenge and Audi 24 Hours of Le Forza Contest, where over 700,000 unique viewers tuned in,” Ekberg adds. “In addition, recent Forza Motorsport 6 FIA Formula E Race Off competitions garnered over 600,000 unique viewers.”

Microsoft released the Turn 10 Summer Car Pack for Forza Motorsport 6 just days ago, offering new cars in a $7 bundle or as individual automobile purchases. This pack includes the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V Sedan, the 2000 BMW 323ti Sport, the 1979 Datsun #33 Bob Sharp Racing 280ZX Turbo, the 1964 Ferrari F-158 F1, the 1964 Watson #1 Sheraton-Thompson Special Roadster, the 2016 Abarth 695 Biposto, and the 1991 Nissan #23 Nissan R91CP.

To register with the ESL Gaming website and compete in the Forza Racing Championship, participants will need a valid email address or a Facebook account.

Volgarr the Viking 2 will take you back to your Ghosts ‘n Goblins days
A viking slashes a tree in Volgarr the Viking 2.

Developer Digital Eclipse is working on a surprising project: Volgarr the Viking 2. The 2D retro sequel will launch on August 6 for PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The news is an out of left field reveal. The first Volgarr the Viking game released in 2013 and was made as an ode to 1080s classics like Ghosts 'n Goblins. Despite being a small release, it sold over 1 million copies over the past decade. As revealed during today's Guerrilla Collective stream, the series is coming back with a new sequel by Digital Eclipse, the team behind this year's Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story.

3 Days of Play PS Plus games to try this weekend (June 7-9)
Key art for Streets of Rage 4.

June 2024 is shaping up to be a pretty great month for PlayStation players. Not only are we coming off an entertaining State of Play showcase, but a new Days of Play initiative surrounding all the video game showcases this month is bringing a lot of new PS Plus additions with it. Many of those games hit PS Plus this week, and three in particular stand out to us.

For owners of Sony's oft-neglected PlayStation VR2, the first game is one of its rare exclusives that take full advantage of the headset's eye-tracking by seeing how often players blink. The next is a new PS Plus Essential game that's a revival of Sega's classic beat-'em-up series for the modern gaming era. Finally, the last title is an atmospheric and eerie fishing game that should entice fans of Lovecraftian horror.

3 first-party Xbox Game Pass games to try this weekend (June 7-9)
Gears 5 Kait Hero Close Up

Microsoft will hold an Xbox Games Showcase and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Direct. this Sunday. These shows will provide a much better idea of what to expect from Xbox over the course of the next year or two. That's really needed right now, as Microsoft has struggled to keep online discussions around Xbox positive as it went multiplatform with some games, laid off thousands of developers, and outright shut down the developers of Hi-Fi Rush and Redfall. Based on leaks and my personal expectations for the showcase, there are three games you can play on Xbox Game Pass this weekend to prepare for the event.

The first is the latest first-person shooter in a long-running series by id Software that might be getting a medieval-set spinoff. After that, we have the fifth entry in a sci-fi Xbox series that still looks fantastic on Xbox Series X/S even though it came out in 2019. Finally, you can prepare for Avowed with the latest RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, a satirical sci-fi game where player choice is critical.
