Not only is it Valentine’s Day weekend, but we’re also on the verge of Xbox’s first major release of the year with AvowedThose with early access can already start playing it, but the rest of us waiting for it to be added to Game Pass will need to wait a few more days. With that upcoming Xbox Series X game in mind, as well as the holiday being a perfect excuse to recommend a great game for couples, we picked out some gems for you to enjoy this weekend. As always, we made sure to offer a nice diverse selection of genres to give you plenty of options but you can’t go wrong downloading any of these games this weekend.

Overcooked! 2

Overcooked 2: Announcement Trailer

You don’t need to be in any kind of relationship to enjoy Overcooked! 2, but it is a game you will want to play in co-op. Technically it is a game you could play on your own, but that removes the chaotic energy of trying to coordinate and synergize with your partners in situations designed to be as inefficient as possible. Because the game uses such simple controls and a concept that most people will be able to grasp quickly, this is a fantastic game to introduce new gamers to as well. There are a ton of levels, and going for the high scores on each one is a real test of teamwork, but even just jumping in for a fun party night with Overcooked! 2 is satisfying.

Fallout: New Vegas

Fallout 4: New Vegas - Showcase Week Gameplay Trailer 2020

We already know a lot of Game Pass subscribers are waiting for Avowed to unlock for the masses, but you can still get your RPG fix with Fallout: New Vegas in the meantime. Sure, this is a huge game that you probably won’t be able to finish before Avowed comes out, but it could be the perfect appetizer if you don’t mind dipping in and out. This is Obsidian’s take on the Fallout universe and features the same level of world building, character writing, and dynamic quests that you can expect in Avowed, only with far better visuals and performance. The fact that it is often considered the best Fallout game despite its age, bugs, and glitches is a testament to the quality of its writing.

Fallout: New Vegas is available now on PS3, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Age of Mythology: Retold

Age of Mythology Retold - Announce Trailer

If you are skipping out on Civilization VII for whatever reason but still want to enjoy a great strategy game, Age of Mythology: Retold hit the service last year without much fanfare. That’s a shame because it is a fantastic game that works remarkably well on a console. You will control a growing civilization, but with a mythological twist of including gods and monsters to help defeat your enemies. It makes it a bit less strict than other strategy games by letting you have a bit more fun with how you engage with your opponents.

Age of Mythology: Retold is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

3 Xbox Game Pass games to play over Memorial Day weekend (May 24-27)
Senua carries a torch in Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2.

This was a big week for Xbox as it received its first console-exclusive first-party game of the year in Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2. We're also approaching a holiday weekend where you'll have a lot more time to play video games if you so choose. As such, there's one really easy recommendation I can make to people looking for what to play this weekend. Hellblade 2 is a very dark and mature game that depicts what it's like to have psychosis, though, so my other recommendations are a little more lighthearted.

The first is an indie game that launched in Xbox Game Pass earlier this month, where players control a cat exploring a city. The other is a collection of classic Pac-Man games that is leaving Xbox Game Pass very soon. Those two are worth checking out if you want some more relaxing, gameplay-focused fun this weekend after the intense experience Xbox Game Studios' latest offers.

Will Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 be on Xbox Game Pass?
Key art for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War season 2.

Activision Blizzard, which is now owned by Microsoft, has just confirmed that the next Call of Duty game is titled Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. There's been one major point of contention ahead of this year's Call of Duty: Will it be on Xbox Game Pass at launch? A new report from The Wall Street Journal suggests that is the case.

Historically, Microsoft has added all its first-party games from Xbox Game Studios and Bethesda to Game Pass the day they launched. That applies to big AAA releases like Starfield, as well as more experimental titles like 2022's Pentiment and Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, which came out this week. Microsoft's public messaging thus far has teased that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will come to the Xbox Game Pass. That said, Microsoft has not officially confirmed it, so there have been conflicting reports on this actually being the case.

3 Xbox Game Pass games you should play this weekend (May 17-19)
Bayek in Assassin's Creed Origins.

As the weekend approaches, you're probably happy that you'll soon have more time to check out some video games. And if you're an Xbox Game Pass subscriber and aren't sure what to play, you have a lot to choose from. That's where I come in. I've looked through the Xbox Game Pass lineup and found three games that I think all kinds of players can have a good time with this weekend.

The first game reimagined what Assassin's Creed could be and is worth a revisit following the announcement of Assassin's Creed Shadows. Next up, we have a standout indie from 2023 that's all about deciphering different languages and exploring how people communicate on an intrinsic level. Finally, there's an underrated magical first-person shooter from EA that just came to the subscription service this week and is worth a look.
