Microsoft and Epic Games today announced that the Xbox 360 title action-shooter Gears of War has gone “triple platinum,” selling more than 3 million copies since the games’ introduction 10 weeks ago.
“Gears of War is tracking to be one of the best-selling video games of all time and has established itself as the most successful new IP of the next generation,” said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of Global Marketing for Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business Entertainment and Devices Division, in a release.
Less than two weeks ago, two new multiplayer maps (“Raven Down” and “Old Bones”) were released on Microsoft’s Xbox Live online gaming service, and they’ve been greeted with wild enthusiasm by Gears of War players, who’ve pulled down the maps more than 750,000 times. So far, Xbox Live has served more than 1.5 million downloads of Gears of War content, including maps, themes, and a video walkthrough.
