Gears of War Takes Top GDC Honors

Gears of War Takes Top GDC Honors

The winners of the 2007 Game Developers Choice Awards have been announced (if not posted on the awards’ Web site yet), and the big winner this year is the first-person shooter Gears of War, from Epic Games and Microsoft Game Studios. Gears of War took home honors for technology and visual arts, as well as the coveted "best game" award.

However, other video game developers weren’t exactly left in the cold. Clover Studio and Capcom’s Okami combination nature/adventure game took top prizes for character design and innovation, and Nintendo’s Wii Sports earned prizes for game design and innovation. Nintendo’s Shigero Miyamoto also received a Lifetime Achievement award; his contributions to the medium include iconic titles like the Mario Brothers and Legend of Zelda franchises.

Iron Lore Entertainment received the award for Best New Studio, while Tetris creator Alexey Pajitov (considered by many to be the “father” of casual video games) was also honored at the event. Writer Greg Costikyan took home the year’s Maverick award. Also honored: The Behemoth’s Castle Crashers was voted audience favorite in an online poll; Samorost Two was voted Best Web Browser Game, and Bang!Howdy received an award for technical excellence.

"There are worlds in some of our older Assassin's Creed games that are still extremely rich."

Surfaced patent shows what an Xbox streaming console would’ve looked like
An Xbox Series X sits next to both Series S models.

There have been a few Xbox devices that have never come to fruition, one of which was Keystone, a prototype for an affordable game streaming device you could hook up to your TV or monitor. Thanks to a surfaced patent, we've gotten an even closer look at what it would've potentially looked like.

The patent, first spotted by Windows Central, gives us a more complete view of the device. We've previously seen the Keystone in the flesh. Microsoft Gaming head Phil Spencer is known for hiding teases and interesting collectibles on the shelf in his office. In a 2022 X (formerly Twitter) post congratulating Bethesda on Fallout's 25th anniversary, you can see a small white device on the top shelf that's actually a Keystone prototype. Xbox told Digital Trends that it was a version of the device made before it decided to "refocus our efforts on a new approach.”
