Gran Turismo 5 due out November 24 (in theory)

It is hard to claim that Gran Turismo 5 is “worth the wait”. After all, could any video game be worth a four year wait? In the time since GT5 was originally supposed to be released, Microsoft has released two Forza games, several arcade racers like Burnout and Need for Speed have hit the market, and several others like Project Gotham have been there to fill the void. It was a more primitive time, where we savages did not even know what an iPad was, and 3D technology was limited to movies about space stations and sharks. The world has changed since those forgotten days of ’06, so can GT5 possibly live up to its own hype?

Looks like we will find out on November 24, when the PlayStation3 exclusive is supposed to be released, according to Sony. Now, we have danced this dance with SCEA many, many, many times before. GT5 has been issued a release date, and we gamers happily drink the kool-aid before hearing that yet another delay has pushed back the release date. But it has been over four years worth of delays. Four. Years.

But things are actually looking good for the November 24 release. Earlier reports suggested that the game had already shipped, and that retailers were told to expect a November 30 debut, but it seems like– in one of the more ironic twists in recent video game news– Sony actually moved up the GT5 launch.

So once again, Gran Turismo 5 has a release date. In theory it will be out in North America and Europe on November 24, and in Japan the following day. Color us cautiously optimistic…

Players won’t have everything available upon booting up Gran Turismo 7. They’ll be restricted to buying cars from a used car lot, and most Word Races won’t be open. Slowly but surely, you’ll unlock new areas to explore in the JRPG-like overworld as you complete menus and increase your driver level. However, you may be looking for something more challenging than AI racers. Unfortunately, multiplayer is locked until you progress to a certain point.

With over 400 cars to unlock, Gran Turismo 7 has no shortage of variety. Those cars include every famous make and model you can think of, like Ford, Ferrari, Mustang, Toyota, and McLaren. Harness your inner Austin powers in a Jaguar, your inner Elon Musk in a Tesla, or your inner 007 in an Aston Martin. However, all of those cars span a gamut of Performance Points – or PP, as the game calls it. In short, the lower your car’s PP, the slower and clunkier it is. The higher your PP, the faster and more maneuverable you become.

My friends and I have a running joke that revolves around a specific brand of car: Honda. Don’t ask me why, but it’s an elaborate gag that’s been happening for years. So when I bought Gran Turismo 7, the ultimate driving simulator, I decided that I was going to take that bit to the next level by buying every single Honda model in the game. I refused to spend my credits on anything but Hondas.

Gran Turismo 7 had other plans, though. While there’s nothing actively stopping me from buying any car I want, it’s clear that the game does not want me to spend my entire budget on Hondas. Frankly, that’s responsible, but it wasn’t going to stop me from trying anyway.
