Ukrainian STALKER 2 studio asks for support as Russia invades

Ukrainian developer GSC Game World, the studio behind the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise, is asking for public support of its country’s armed forces as Russia begins an invasion.

The Russian Federation has declared war on Ukraine.
The future is unknown, but we are sure of our Armed Forces and country.
We ask all: do not stand aside and help those in need.

In a post on Twitter, the company, which is based in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, said “Our country woke up with the sounds of explosions and weapons fire, but is ready to defend its freedom and independence, for it remains strong and ready for anything. The future is unknown, but we hope for the best, are ever sure of our armed forces and our belief in Ukraine.”

Along with a call for other members of the gaming industry to share its message, GSC Game World posted the details of a special Ukrainian bank account meant to support the country’s armed forces. The bank account, labeled “UA843000010000000047330992708,” can accept multiple forms of currency, including U.S. dollars, euros, British pounds, and Ukrainian Hryvnias according to the National Bank of Ukraine’s website.

GSC Game World isn’t the only notable game developer inside of Ukraine. 4A Games, the studio behind the Metro franchise, was founded in Kyiv and currently has a studio located there.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has seemingly been prompted by the country’s willingness to join NATO, which Russia has long seen as a threat to its power. According to Reuters, in the early morning of February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered “a special military operation” inside of Ukraine to protect both Ukrainian and Russian citizens inside the country from “genocide.” Western nations have subsequently labeled any claims of genocide inside of Ukraine as Russian propaganda.

Inside of Ukraine, armed forces are fighting off Russia’s invasion. Following Russian bombings of multiple cities across Ukraine, which was part of the USSR before it collapsed in 1991, Russian troops, tanks, and helicopters have moved into the country. Ukraine’s military has claimed that it has destroyed four Russian tanks and killed 50 troops near the city of Kharkiv.

In response to Russia’s invasion, the United States and other NATO allies are levying harsh financial sanctions against the country, though the U.S. will not send troops to fight in Ukraine. “Russia alone is responsible for the death and destruction this attack will bring, and the United States and its Allies and partners will respond in a united and decisive way,” said U.S. President Joe Biden.

All photo-op locations in Spider-Man 2
Miles sitting on top of a building at sunset.

Get me pictures of Spider-Man! Well, actually, in Spider-Man 2 you never actually have to snap any pics of either Spider-Man. As established in the first game, Peter has already moved on from his job as a photographer for the Bugle and is focused completely on science (when not saving the day, of course). When that doesn't work out well enough to pay the bills, he falls back on his old freelance photography gig to help make ends meet by going to key spots around the map to snap some shots to sell. These are among the most numerous icons you will see pop up on your map as you play, and while each one only rewards two City Tokens for completing them, they take a few seconds at most to get the perfect shot. Let's take a tour of the city to find all the photo-op locations in Spider-Man 2.
All photo-op locations

Photo-ops will populate the map in batches as you go through the game, but ultimately, there will be 23 unique spots you will need to stop and get a picture of to complete the entire quest. To snap the perfect picture, swipe down on the touchpad to open up your camera app when near the target area and look for whatever subject you need to capture. This will be obvious in nearly all situations, such as the above mascots, or a piece of art, or even entire buildings. The camera itself will help you as well. If you're in range, the text will let you know if the subject is in view, obscured, or in focus. Once the ring is green, that shot will count and you can hit R1 to take the shot. After each one, you get a little bit of context and dialogue about whatever it is you are submitting.

How to fast travel in Spider-Man 2
A fleet of drones flying towards new york.

There are few games that are as fun to simply move around in as Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Between the silky smooth swinging and new wingsuits, the expanded New York map is a Spider-Man's playground. However, with the addition of an all-new section of the map, getting all the way from one end to the other will start to become a time-consuming process. As fun as traversal is, there will be times when you're doing sidequests or cleaning up collectibles that you'll just want to get where you need to be and skip the trip. Spider-Man 2 pushes the PlayStation 5's SSD to the limits with near-instant fast travel, but it takes a bit of work before you're able to use it.
How to unlock fast travel

Fast travel is not only locked by default, but must be earned for each of the game's individual boroughs. Each section of the map has a completion ranking that fills up as you perform activities within it, such as sidequests, photo-ops, Marko's Memories, stop crimes, and more. Each will boost the total level, with three rewards tied to set points. The first will give you some Rare Tech Parts, but it's the second one we're after. Once you hit about 50% completion, you will unlock the option to fast travel in that specific zone. You will need to repeat the process for each borough to fully unlock the map.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Gamescom trailer confirms delay, but looks fantastic
A Stalker from Stalker 2 look off in the distance with a radioactive symbol behind him.

At Gamescom 2023, Ukrainian game developer GSC Game World gave another update on its highly anticipated first-person shooter horror game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. It did push the game back until next year, but we also got our best look yet at gameplay in a new trailer.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl — Bolts & Bullets Trailer
The trailer begins with the player emerging from a sewer into the game's irradiated wasteland. We see the player slowly move around a few different environments before shooting at a supernatural enemy in a facility. The trailer only gets more intense from there as we see the player kit out their gun before taking on a variety of enemies, from humans to dogs to more disgusting-looking supernatural enemies. At the end of the trailer, we learn that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will now launch in the first quarter of 2024 and that preorders are finally open.
This long-awaited sequel to a PC cult classic has had a very turbulent development. It was originally supposed to be released in April 2022, but has gotten delayed multiple times due to development challenges and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Some of its developers are fighting with the Ukrainian Armed Forces, while others moved to the Czech Republic to finish the game. On top of all of that, GSC Game World has faced multiple cyberattacks and game leaks it attributes to Russia.

Despite all of the challenges GSC Game World has faced in the development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, the game seems to be shaping up nicely. This new trailer is full of intense action and very atmospheric moments, and previews from people playing the game at Gamescom 2023 are positive. Hopefully, GSC Game World can take this positive momentum and meet its new release window.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl will launch sometime in the first quarter of 2024 for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
