Rumors are circulating (via Engadget) that, along with details about the upcoming Halo 5: Guardians, Microsoft will also use E3 to announce Halo: The Master Chief Collection, a compilation of HD remakes of the four previous numbered Halo games. The package is said to comprise updated versions of 2001’s Halo: Combat Evolved, 2004’s Halo 2, 2007’s Halo 3, and 2012’s Halo 4. Notably, it will not include spinoff’s like 2009’s Halo: ODST and 2010’s Halo: Reach. The only previous remake of the series was Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, released for Xbox 360 in 2011.
The announcement is well-timed when the demise of GameSpy has raised the hackles of preservationists, concerned about losing access to their favorite bits of gaming history, including Halo: Combat Evolved. Porting these titles to Xbox One will ensure that a new generation of gamers can experience the Master Chief’s saga in its entirety.
