Halo 3 Beta Due on Xbox Live May 16

Microsoft and Bungie Studios have announced that the multiplayer beta of its forthcoming Halo 3 game title for the Xbox 360 will to live on its Xbox Live service on May 16, 2007, running through June 6th. As one might guess from the title, Halo 3 is the third installment of Microsoft’s Halo sci-fi battle franchise, and follows the adventures of Master Chief as he fights to stop the alien Covenant, destroy the impending Flood thread, and (naturally) save all humanity.

"Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 changed the face of console gaming forever," said Shane Kim, corporate VP of Microsoft Game Studios. "Gamers from around the world have logged more than 800 million hours on Xbox Live playing Halo 2, and years after its launch it remains the No. 1 title on our Xbox Live network. Bringing an early look at the multiplayer elements of Halo 3 to our passionate fan base is tremendously exciting for us."

Want to participate in the beta? That might be tricky if you haven’t been paying attention like a true, devoted Halo fan. The official ticket to the Halo 3 beta was through Microsoft’s "Rule of Three" promotion, which was included in the Xbox 360 game Crackdown; beta participants must also have an Xbox Live Gold account. Games who didn’t buy Crackdown to get into the Halo 3 beta still can: copies marked with a Halo 3 beta sticker purchased before the beta period begins on May 16 will act as a key letting gamers download and take part in the beta.

If buying Crackdown just isn’t on your agenda, Bungie has thoughtfully posted some trailer video and behind-the-scenes footage on its Web site; the videos are also available via Xbox Live Marketplace.

The Halo 3 beta will offer three maps (Valhalla, High Ground, and Snowbound) offering a mix of large- and medium-scale combat environments. Players will be able to take control of new vehicles and take each other on with new weapons, including a new Assault Rifle, the Brute Spiker, the Spartan Laser, and new Spike Grenades.

3 Xbox Game Pass games to play over Memorial Day weekend (May 24-27)
Senua carries a torch in Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2.

This was a big week for Xbox as it received its first console-exclusive first-party game of the year in Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2. We're also approaching a holiday weekend where you'll have a lot more time to play video games if you so choose. As such, there's one really easy recommendation I can make to people looking for what to play this weekend. Hellblade 2 is a very dark and mature game that depicts what it's like to have psychosis, though, so my other recommendations are a little more lighthearted.

The first is an indie game that launched in Xbox Game Pass earlier this month, where players control a cat exploring a city. The other is a collection of classic Pac-Man games that is leaving Xbox Game Pass very soon. Those two are worth checking out if you want some more relaxing, gameplay-focused fun this weekend after the intense experience Xbox Game Studios' latest offers.

3 PS Plus free demos you should try this weekend (May 17-19)
Peter attacks enemies with the Symbiote Suit in Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

One of the most underrated features of PlayStation Plus Premium is the game trials that it offers. Although Sony does not put its AAA games on the service the day they release, it and several other third-party publishers offer up free demos that essentially give players full access to the game for a limited period of time. It's a great way to test a new game before you buy and it also gives you an excuse to try out a variety of different games this weekend without making the time commitment to beat them all. I looked through the full list of game trials that PlayStation Plus Premium offers and pinpointed three of the demos that are most worth your time.

The first is a two-hour demo for one of the PlayStation 5's biggest exclusives. The next will give you a two-hour taste of the latest fighting game in a long-running franchise. Finally, the one-hour trial of one of the year's best indies will get you hooked on the card-based roguelike that consumed my life for a bit.

3 Xbox Game Pass games you should play this weekend (May 17-19)
Bayek in Assassin's Creed Origins.

As the weekend approaches, you're probably happy that you'll soon have more time to check out some video games. And if you're an Xbox Game Pass subscriber and aren't sure what to play, you have a lot to choose from. That's where I come in. I've looked through the Xbox Game Pass lineup and found three games that I think all kinds of players can have a good time with this weekend.

The first game reimagined what Assassin's Creed could be and is worth a revisit following the announcement of Assassin's Creed Shadows. Next up, we have a standout indie from 2023 that's all about deciphering different languages and exploring how people communicate on an intrinsic level. Finally, there's an underrated magical first-person shooter from EA that just came to the subscription service this week and is worth a look.
