Halo 5 Guardians beta kicks off in December 2014

Halo 5 Guardians might not be coming to Xbox One until 2015, but you’ll have a chance to play some of it before this year is over in the planned beta. Due to kick off in December 2014, access to the Guardians beta is included with all purchases of Halo: The Master Chief Collection

In addition to bringing the four numbered Halo games to Xbox One for the first time, The Master Chief Collection also packs in the Halo: Nightfall live-action series, produced by Ridley Scott. It’s an episodic story, meant to serve as a bridge between the events of Halo 4 and Halo 5, with individual episodes to be released after The Master Chief Collection collection launches. The beta will kick off shortly after Nightfall‘s final episode, and run for a limited amount of time after that.

Neither Microsoft nor 343 Industries has revealed anything about Halo 5 Guardians, but we’re told that the beta will represent a broad swath of what to expect from the finished product, in terms of the gameplay. Expect more details to emerge on the Guardians beta as December draws nearer.

"Players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we've created in the past and modernize them," he says, implying that it could pertain to games made before Odyssey. "There are worlds in some of our older Assassin's Creed games that are still extremely rich."

Surfaced patent shows what an Xbox streaming console would’ve looked like
An Xbox Series X sits next to both Series S models.

There have been a few Xbox devices that have never come to fruition, one of which was Keystone, a prototype for an affordable game streaming device you could hook up to your TV or monitor. Thanks to a surfaced patent, we've gotten an even closer look at what it would've potentially looked like.

The patent, first spotted by Windows Central, gives us a more complete view of the device. We've previously seen the Keystone in the flesh. Microsoft Gaming head Phil Spencer is known for hiding teases and interesting collectibles on the shelf in his office. In a 2022 X (formerly Twitter) post congratulating Bethesda on Fallout's 25th anniversary, you can see a small white device on the top shelf that's actually a Keystone prototype. Xbox told Digital Trends that it was a version of the device made before it decided to "refocus our efforts on a new approach.”
