Is Lucasarts developing an open-world RPG?

There’s a new job posting up on the Lucasfilm careers website for a gameplay engineer position at LucasArts which mentions that “experience with open-world RPGs is a plus” and requires applicants to have at least one console title under their belts. It’s far from confirmation of such a game being in development, and it could just the company filling in a role for Star Wars: The Old Republic, though the core of that MMO’s ongoing development is being handled by BioWare.

An open-world Star Wars RPG risks diluting some of what SW:TOR is going for, but it would certainly be welcomed by fans. BioWare’s Knights of the Old Republic and it’s Obsidian Entertainment-developed follow-up remain two of the most popular games of the last console generation, and the franchise as a whole continues to be successful. This could also be a sign that the studio is working on a console port of Old Republic, given the evidence.

Of course, LucasArts doesn’t necessarily mean Star Wars. In addition to other Lucasfilm franchises like Indiana Jones and (dare I say it?) Willow, there’s also a deep catalog of past games to draw from. Not to mention the possibility that this position connects with some entirely new project. All we’ve got to go on now is that the company is looking for someone with console experience and preferably a background in crafting open-world RPGs.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake: release date speculation, trailers, gameplay, and more
A Sith lord in the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake trailer.

Before Disney bought the Star Wars IP and cut nearly everything that wasn't the main film series out of the canon, there were tons of expanded Star Wars universe games, books, and shows that were technically all canon. Some games obviously attempted to retell the stories from the films, while others tried to fill in gaps between them. When BioWare got the chance to make a Star Wars game, they decided to set it where they had the most creative freedom possible: the distant past.

Knights of the Old Republic was originally released on PC and Xbox in 2003. Taking the experience BioWare had for writing deep, complex, and layered RPG stories and mixing it with the setting of the Star Wars universe, this original tale of hunting down Darth Revan became an instant classic. Even nearly two decades later, many consider it to be one of the best Star Wars stories ever told, films included. However, two decades will make even the best game show its age, which was why rumors about a Knights of the Old Republic remake were so exciting. Thankfully, those rumors turned out to be true. We only have a short teaser and some articles for information so far, but here's everything we know about the Knights of the Old Republic remake.
