PlayStation Plus members get 'Journey,' 'Badland,' more for free in September

PlayStation Plus Free PS4 Games Lineup - September 2016
Sony has announced next month’s incoming batch of PlayStation Plus freebies, revealing that service subscribers can expect free copies of the action role-playing game Lords of the Fallen and indie hit Journey starting next week.

Other free highlights for September include the Prince of Persia series sequel The Forgotten Sands and Badland, which was honored as Apple’s iPad game of the year in 2013.

PlayStation 4 owners with an active PlayStation Plus membership will get three free games in September, including Lords of the Fallen, a third-person action RPG inspired by FromSoftware’s Dark Souls. Developed by Deck 13, Lords of the Fallen was previously given away for free as part of Games With Gold, Microsoft’s PlayStation Plus equivalent program.

Thatgamecompany’s Journey also joins next month’s PlayStation Plus lineup on the PlayStation 4 and PS3. Released in 2012, Journey puts players on a wordless trek through a massive desert, where they will encounter fellow players making the same expedition via a unique online multiplayer setup.

Frogmind’s Badland rounds out next month’s planned slate of multiplatform freebies, debuting as a featured PlayStation Plus title across the PlayStation 4, PS3, and PS Vita. Also available on mobile platforms and PCs via Steam, Badland is a side-scrolling action game in which players must fend off an endless array of deadly enemies and traps.

PS Vita devotees can also expect a free copy of Amnesia: Memories, a narrative-driven visual novel from Idea Factory International. Next month’s free PlayStation 3 offerings include Datura, a PlayStation Move-compatible adventure game from developer Plastic Studios, and Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, a third-person action game originally released alongside Disney’s 2010 feature film Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

September’s lineup of free PlayStation Plus games will be available for download via the PlayStation Network starting on September 6.

I would buy a PlayStation Portal 2 if it had this one feature
A Pulse Elite, DualSense, and PlayStation Portal sit on a table.

I've had a bit of a love-hate relationship with the PlayStation Portal since it launched. Initially, I was disappointed by Sony's cloud streaming device. I was impressed with its screen and appreciated its DualSense integration, but its slimmeddown features made it feel like a cheap version of a good idea. I've since learned to find a use case for my PlayStation Portal that turned it into an integral part of my gaming setup. It's very imperfect, but that doesn't mean it's not useful.

Ever since its launch, I've been hoping for a refreshed follow-up, whether that be a Pro model or a true PlayStation Portal 2. It may be way too early to start discussing that considering that the Portal just launched in November 2023, but the promising device has enough glaring flaws that I'd welcome a fast-tracked successor. If Sony were to make a PlayStation Portal 2, though, there's one feature that's nonnegotiable: Bluetooth.

Grand Theft Auto 5 and 11 more games are leaving PS Plus in June
Trevor, Michael, and Franklin are all holding guns in GTA 5 promotional art.

PlayStation Plus users will be losing out on 12 games in June, and one of them is a must-play if you're a fan of open-world action adventures from 2013.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is widely considered to be one of the most iconic games all time, and it's definitely the best Grand Theft Auto game. It's also easy to play on nearly any platform (minus Nintendo Switch, of course). It even received a next-gen upgrade for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2022. That said, if you have a PlayStation Plus subscription and wanted to play it at some point -- or just wanted to get a session or two in before Grand Theft Auto 6 -- you'll have until June 12 to do so.

3 new PS Plus games to play this Memorial Day weekend (May 24-27)
Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Memorial Day is coming up, so you're probably wondering what games you should play on your PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 over the holiday weekend. Lucky for you, a new batch of games were added to the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra game catalog earlier this week, and it brought plenty of games well worth your time. Three in particular stand out to me; download them today and try them out over the next few days.

The first is a Western from Rockstar Games that needs little introduction and is a must-play if you haven't experienced it yet. The next is an open-world game that kick-started a new series for Ubisoft and turns 10 next week. Finally, a retro PlayStation 1 game that just came to PlayStation Plus Premium offers up a good time if you enjoy sports or racing games.
