King’s Quest, Gauntlet free with PlayStation Plus in December

PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive free downloadable copies of King’s Quest Chapter 1: A Knight to Remember and Gauntlet: Slayer Edition as part of December’s Instant Game Collection lineup, Sony announced today.

The next batch of freebies also features Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, Freedom Wars, and other standouts for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita.

Starting in December, PlayStation Plus members can download the first chapter in Sierra’s resurrected adventure game franchise King’s Quest free of charge. Released digitally in July, King’s Quest Chapter 1: A Knight to Remember is developed by The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom studio The Odd Gentlemen, and features numerous callbacks to its point-and-click predecessors from the 80s and 90s.

Also on tap for PS4 owners next month is Gauntlet: Slayer Edition, a co-op dungeon hack based on the classic Atari arcade game. The PS4 port, developed by Magicka creator Arrowhead Game Studios, features several additions and enhancements compared to the PC edition released in 2014.

Over on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Plus subscribers can expect to receive digital copies of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, an 80s action movie pastiche and over-the-top first-person shooter from Ubisoft. Also up for grabs in December is EA’s snowboarding franchise reboot SSX, which previously hit retail in 2012.

PlayStation Vita owners will get Sony’s dystopian action-adventure game Freedom Wars for free via PlayStation Plus in December. Boasting gameplay mechanics similar to Capcom’s Monster Hunter series, Freedom Wars features a storyline in which players serve a lengthy prison term, and must reduce their sentence by performing odd jobs and rescue missions. Ratloop’s PS Vita run-and-gun shooter Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken will also be free to download for PlayStation Plus members in December.

All of December’s featured PlayStation Plus games will be free to download for service subscribers starting on December 1st.

3 new PS Plus games to play this Memorial Day weekend (May 24-27)
Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Memorial Day is coming up, so you're probably wondering what games you should play on your PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 over the holiday weekend. Lucky for you, a new batch of games were added to the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra game catalog earlier this week, and it brought plenty of games well worth your time. Three in particular stand out to me; download them today and try them out over the next few days.

The first is a Western from Rockstar Games that needs little introduction and is a must-play if you haven't experienced it yet. The next is an open-world game that kick-started a new series for Ubisoft and turns 10 next week. Finally, a retro PlayStation 1 game that just came to PlayStation Plus Premium offers up a good time if you enjoy sports or racing games.

3 PS Plus free demos you should try this weekend (May 17-19)
Peter attacks enemies with the Symbiote Suit in Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

One of the most underrated features of PlayStation Plus Premium is the game trials that it offers. Although Sony does not put its AAA games on the service the day they release, it and several other third-party publishers offer up free demos that essentially give players full access to the game for a limited period of time. It's a great way to test a new game before you buy and it also gives you an excuse to try out a variety of different games this weekend without making the time commitment to beat them all. I looked through the full list of game trials that PlayStation Plus Premium offers and pinpointed three of the demos that are most worth your time.

The first is a two-hour demo for one of the PlayStation 5's biggest exclusives. The next will give you a two-hour taste of the latest fighting game in a long-running franchise. Finally, the one-hour trial of one of the year's best indies will get you hooked on the card-based roguelike that consumed my life for a bit.

Arthur Morgan walks into a burning house in Red Dead Redemption 2.

If you somehow haven't played the 2018 open-world classic Red Dead Redemption 2 yet and you have a PlayStation Plus subscription, we have good news. PlayStation announced in a blog post Wednesday that the game will be available for free for the Plus program's Extra and Premium tiers.

Subscribers can play this massive hit, along with 12 other games, starting on May 21.  Users will also get access to Red Dead Online, the game's multiplayer experience that allows players to create their own character and mess around inside the world as they see fit -- from forming a group of outlaws to rob people on the road to hunting animals.
