Level-5 announces Professor Layton and the Legacy of the Super Civilization A

In continuing the trend of the series’ relationship with the west, Nintendo and Level-5 have announced a brand new Professor Layton game for the Nintendo 3DS just before the last one is ready to come out in the United States.

During Wednesday’s Nintendo Direct event that saw a pair of unusual games get announced for the resurgent handheld, Level-5 and Nintendo also unveiled Professor Layton and the Legacy of the Super Civilization A. For a series known for convoluted titles, we’ve got to applaud Level-5 for outdoing themselves.

While the trailer for Layton’s latest outing shows off the same sort of whimsical art and puzzling that made the franchise an institution over the past half decade, it’s also a bit ominous. Level-5 claims that Legacy of the Super Civilization A will be Professor Hershel Layton’s “final adventure.” Not the last game in the series mind you, but the last outing for the titular protagonist.

Don’t fret, oh ye fans of enormous brown top hats. Hershel Layton will be back for at least one other game. Level-5 is still tinkering on its Capcom collaboration Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney, wherein Layton and Phoenix Wright will take turns pointing at stuff.

While the Nintendo 3DS had a rocky launch, the handheld system recovered gracefully and ended up having one of the best game lineups of any Nintendo system. Many of these 3DS games, like Super Mario 3D Land and Fire Emblem Awakening, were very popular and well-known. Still, the 3DS had a lot of fantastic games that not as many people know about and threaten to be lost to time when the eShop closes down.
The 3DS eShop will shut down soon, preventing people from purchasing new games. As such, we've been reflecting on the system's vast library and all of the fantastic games that 3DS owners will no longer be able to buy digitally. From games that we think will skyrocket even further in price after the store shuts down to some enjoyable hidden gems that didn't get the attention they deserve, you might want to snag these 3DS games before you can't anymore after March 27.
Ever Oasis

Grezzo is one of Nintendo's most underrated developers. It's delivered top-notch The Legend of Zelda remakes like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Link's Awakening. So what if I told you that it used that experience to make an original IP for 3DS that's one of the best-looking and expansive games on the system? Ever Oasis, a 2017 3DS game, follows a young kid as they help a water spirit named Esna build an oasis and try to save their brother from Chaos.
The result is a mix of 3D The Legend of Zelda and city management games. Players can venture out into surprisingly large open worlds and dungeons to restock and grow the number of "bloom booths." This mix of open-world exploration, dungeon crawling, and oasis-building will keep players engaged for dozens of hours, and it also stands as one of the deepest and best-looking action-adventure games on the platform.
Ever Oasis didn't get much attention when it launched because the Nintendo Switch had been released a couple of months earlier. Still, it stands as one of the 3DS' best games, so it's a shame that more people don't know about it. It risks being forgotten forever now the 3DS eShop is closing down, so check it out before the closure; it will surpass your expectations.

With a few concessions, Persona 5 Royal is right at home on Switch

Persona 5 Royal is one of the greatest Japanese RPGs of all time and had been touted as a phenomenal PlayStation exclusive -- until now. The original vanilla version, Persona 5, hit Japan in late 2016 for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. The expanded Persona 5 Royal included new features such as an entire new winter semester and a new Phantom Thief character. Suffice it to say, the former PS4 exclusive Persona 5 Royal was previously the absolute definitive edition to play the amazing dungeon crawling and life sim hybrid.

Now, the game is coming to Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch for more audiences to enjoy. It’s also getting a native PS5 version, as well as being added to Xbox Game Pass. Over 40 items of previously released DLC that contain extra costumes and bonus Personas are included on these new platforms.

You can play a fan-made Super Mario Bros. 5 in Mario Maker 2 right now

It's been a bit since we've had a brand-new 2D Mario title, but one fan has taken it upon himself to provide that to those pining for a new entry in the classic platformer franchise. After seven years of hard work, Twitter user Metroid Mike 64 has finished his unofficial Super Mario Bros. 5 using Super Mario Maker 2 on Switch -- and you can play through the entire thing right now.

Metroid Mike 64 shared the news with his followers on Sunday, pointing out that he's been working on the project since 2015 with the goal of creating "a classic Mario game that plays as if Nintendo created it themselves." This, he points out, means a complete lack of the kinds of masochistic and troll levels that are commonly seen in Mario Maker 2, instead providing players with something focused on nostalgia and old-school charm.
